SKYPE vs Google video chat

You need to give more information video or audio, business or the odd personal call.

Also the second link that you posted is about Skype "stealing" bandwidth when idle. It isn't really stealing bandwidth, it is updating presence information both for you and your contacts. If you keep the Gmail tab open for example you will be amazed at how much data it is using.

The best thing to do is get a bandwidth monitor and make calls and see for yourself. I understand your concern is about bandwidth usage but one thing you need to ask yourself is what are the people you are trying to contact use.

A thumb suck would say that more people are actually using Skype for video and audio calls. G-Talk is more frequently used for IMs.

Just get uncapped. Will make your life much easier.

I think its more about the Super nodes that Skype used, It was born from P2P. Well that was before the Microsoft days: http://arstechnica.com/business/201...ernodes-with-linux-boxes-hosted-by-microsoft/

Side note: Funny to see them use Linux boxes for this :)

I have not yet done my own tests this is all preliminary, The reason for this question is should adsl be used or can a 3G connection suffice, According to Skype self 3G connections is not a good idea for skyping.

Also would it be better to take a tablet on contract with 2gig a month and used that, or a notebook with 3G or adsl.

I would like to run my own tests I just dont have the equipment to do that.

I have know been informed that the setup has changed so probably need to change the thread name.

ADSL will be used with a laptop and skype, The person in whose home this will be installed is very forgetfull so the family wants to install 4 cameras in various positions in the home, The children then want to access these cameras at anytime via web to see if they can help find whatever the person is looking for at that time.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of software and setup could be used?

Hi There you would need CCTV with Web access capabilities to do that.
I have not worked with any providers so cant recommend any in particular. Reditron I know is a reputable company so you could start there. Or you could do some research on the web I came across this which does go into it. So start there for an education.

Regards

Tim
