Question from my friend and would appreciate any assistance/ideas:

One for the clever people:
I have noticed my bandwidth going south and thought it was all the updates I've been running on my various computers.

In the past week, two people have asked me as to how much bandwidth Skype use. One actually said the 'cost' has increased and they cannot afford to use it so much to talk to overseas family.

Now my Skype runs the whole day when I log in, mostly used for texting, no voice or video, what is the story here?
Is there new algorithms or codecs at play here?
(I use a Windows version and a Ubuntu Linux version..)

Thanks!

if your just texting... skype sips bandwidth. if you and the person you are talking to are on the same subnet... your packets dont even leave for the internet.

check your windows box for trojans and other malware. esp. if you are a torrent user.

@bleh69.....thanks for the advice. My friend don't use any torrents. Any other software available to monitor your internet activity?
Thanks

Did a test to echo123 and it peaked at 7.8kB/s and averaged about 5-6kB/s which is below 64kb/s and more like an average of 40-48kb/s.

Video will use more, 40-70kb/s but it automatically adapts to your available bandwidth.

I doubt skype is the cause, unless you've disabled NAT.

perhaps try this

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Skype\Phone]
"DisableSupernode"=dword:00000001

and do some reading up on supernodes
Pretty sure this doesn't work for current version.
