Just watched the "BBC Working Lunch" programme online (go to bbc news and click on buisness, then on the right hand side of the website click on the video (working lunch), there is a interview with the owner of skype. The interview starts at 28min/18secs so you dont have to watch the whole programme. Quite interesting he said in 10 years time we we will consider it stupid that we paid for telephone calls at all, which made me think where does that leave Telkom.

In deep **** from Telkom's old style business point of view. If they however look at it from the right angle there are tons of new opportunities in pure data to home business...

;)

Phone companies per se will cease to exist IMO to be replaced by data providers. You can already see it happening in the USA with telco's finally providing ADSL with no telephone service and big upsurge in triple play services including voip, internet and cable tv.

Instead of trying to protect a dying technology Telkom should embrace the future.

Still where they are today, 10 years behind the rest of the world, SA would have degenerated in the same way, Telkom still protected
We have super broadband, as we wont be here, imigrated to a country that is in the frontline of modern technology without bleeding the consumers dry
We will have +- 1 million internet users on line, the rest of the population will still be excluded by Telkom.
THIS country will be a F-up so would TElkom still be

don't get over excited ... They TOUCH tomorrow ... not embrace it ;)
Sorry for the pun, They use a wooden telephone pole* to touch it, but never reached it
*(used from soweto as the line got cut off, too expensive to afford)

Is anybody using Skype / Dual phones in the Helderberg area, I would like a demo as well as discussing how to buy Skype credit for making calls.

You can use SKYPE anywhere in the world, all you do is download the sofware. If you wish to buy calls to landlines anywhere in the world you just buy them online. Its really simple. A VOIP phone costs around ÂŁ20.00. (R240.00)

I have skype on my PC, i wanted to switch over to SkypeOut, BUT i heard some bad reviews about being not able to buy credit online. My company is looking at using Skype BUT the bosses would like to have a demo 1st AND they would also like to get some 1st hand reviews.

I have not had a problem buying credits, neither have 2 of my colleagues. But none of us used South African credit cards ...maybe that's the problem? Otherwise it works just fine -- quality is not too bad, sometimes comparable to cell phone quality, but usually better from my experience.

I live in the Helderberg area and would give you a hand but I'm stuck in Grahamstown until 20/11 (studying at Rhodes).

If it's for proper business purposes maybe a better solution would be to go with Internet Solutions and their VOIS services? My dad makes extensive use of SkypeOut (He uses his AMEX card - haven't tried other CCs) to mainly South America and it works ok during the day on ADSL but is far better during non-business hours (which suites him anyway due to the time variance)

I can't comment on how well it performs but maybe there is someone else out there who can

Well is there some1 out there??
Thanx 4 the help up till now guys . . . and gals (i think).
My bosses want to go for the cheapest alternative, so Skype seems to be the way forward. Basically all i need is a demo on a VOIP fone, so i can see for myself if its an option.
thanx again

It costs only 10 Euros to buy and what is that nowadays
Used Nedbank debit card to but online.
SkyPE Out
http://www.skype.net/products/skypeout/
If you look at the rates page not excellent rates for SA

SkyPE is not the solution for inter-company calling, maybe in small
businesses but with Telkom ADSL shaping VoIP & VPN packets they are
killing those users that used it, switch to IS ADSL account

http://www.skype.net/products/skypeout/rates/all_rates.html?currency=ZAR
in SA Rands excludes VAT
South Africa ZAR 0.436
South Africa - Mobile ZAR 1.500
South Africa-Cape Town ZAR 0.436
South Africa-Johannesburg ZAR 0.436

thanx Kilos,

Just 1 more Q. . . if i switch to IS ADSL?? will i have to switch my isp as well (email addy's and website). We r a reasonably small company and most of our calls are international. Most of our customers are using Skype but we make regular calls to overseas mobile and home numbers as well.
It seems Skype is still the way to go. . . i think i'm just a bit scared to jump in and take the chance.

I'll let all u helpfull computer freaks know what happens.

Thanx
