I was using SkypeOut for long time on dial up and more or less never had any problems phoning people.
I'm using Iburst now and somehow quality of the connection is not as it was. There are some delays and from time to time noise that completly block any voice.
Does anyone of you have similar problmes and how this can be sorted out?

I use Skype regularly over iBurst and have to say that the quality of the call leaves much to be desired. As to how to fix the issue, well that I leave up to the experts.

I dont use iBurst, but call quality often depends on the time of day. If you use Skype after business hours the quality is normally perfect. Business hours on the other hand are sometimes bad

I'm using it over the weekend and problems are there.
Me thinks it is after I stareted using Skype

I use Skype on a daily basis and have never had any breakup or quality issues. I only ever use it in the evenings or on weekends though.

One of my colegue as well.
But I am strugling. Maybe my PC is too old and I use USB headset and USB IBurst so maybe that slows it somehow

I use Skype in the evenings using a dial-up connection. With speeds as low as 38kbps, the quality is fine! But thanks for the warning... was investigating iBurst, and this is a definite minus towards them...

Can the reason be that they have to use teklom infrastructure to connect to the Skype servers? And we know what teklom does with VoIP packets if they can find them! :(

Looks like it is not general problem. Some people have great quality. Some not.
I was using Absa and Discovery like providers and had no problems with them even with 0.8 Skype version. But now something is going wrong. Just don't know what

I use iBurst regularly as well, without any problems. You might have a point regarding the USB headset. I use a normal analogue headset without any problems

I am using an analogue microphone and speakers and am still having problems. It is not terrible to the point where it cannot be used, but you do miss the odd word here and there which can be rather frustrating.

Am waiting to hear back from iBust as to whether they do shape VoIP/Skype.

Who did you contact. Drop his e-mail here. If more people start buggining them maybe they are going to do something about

I don't believe WBS shape Skype, cause when I'm chatting to a mate in the UK on his 2mb ADSL, my outgoing is running at about 14kbytes/sec and my incoming about 20 kbytes/sec.

Doesn't seem shaped or throttled to me.
Skype is very dependant on Latency and Packet Loss.
I normally get very good quality calls on Skype with iBurst.

AGAIN: Depends on Tower. If you are on Northcliff, Skype becomes useless. Due to congestion I believe.

Skype is definatly unshapped!
And regarding poor quality it's because of the wireless nature of iburst that some ppl will have no problems and other's with weaker signal have problems. Personally I have used iburst for skype several times and had good quality with no issues....except once or twice where there was a delay for a sec, but it bounced back quickly.

My one friend in the UK even told me he has talked to several ppl in SA with skype who had ADSL and other connections, and he said my skype connection with him was the best.

I'm not saying iBurst is great....just last night i lost connectivity for a couple of hours :( I am saying it can't be generalised by a few ppl cause fact is it all depends on network congestion to the country/area your connecting to and your connection to the closest tower.

It has been confirmed that no VoIP product is shaped by iBurst. It has more to do with latency issues - the lower the pings and more stable they are, the better products like Skype work. (as has been stated by a few of the posters in this thread such as Crash).

P0tenc, I don't think anyone was generalising as it is pretty clear that there are users who do not experience problems, but there are also those that do.

We seem to have gotten to the core of the problem and it boils down to what we are all trying to achieve - the lowest and most consistent pings with as little packet loss as possible.

Funny enough my signal is almost always 100%. So maybe I'll try to ping tower.
And this is using Skype out, so phoning people on the phone so theoreticly only my internet counts.
But thanks everyone for cotribution

same as a few others... 95% of the time quality is perfect, including conference calls, but sometimes it does give a few problems. most prob latency related. just packets get lost or take too long to get to the pc. but as I said, most of the time it is perfect

Skype works like a charm for me... Those damn conference calls with the Great U.S. of A go a lot better when you can just walk away from the laptop...
