SkypeOut rates to SA

Hi guys,

I am considering using Skype as an alternative to Telkom. It would be great if someone can check the following calculations, because it seems like you will only save money when making national and cellular calls during peak time.

I used the VAT inclusive amounts from both Web Sites as it is today:

Telkom Local Peak: 0.00634 x 60s = 0.3804 p/min
Telkom Local Callmore: 0.00267 x 60s = 0.1602 p/min

Telkom Natl Peak: 0.01336 x 60s = 0.8016 p/min
Telkom Natl Callmore: 0.00668 x 60s = 0.4008 p/min

Cellular Peak: 1.886 x 1min = 1.886 p/min
Cellular Offpeak: 1.174 x 1min = 1.174 p/min

Skype to Telkom: 0.503 x 1min = 0.503 p/min
Skype to Cellular: 1.730 x 1min = 1.730 p/min

On International calls of course Skype beats Telkom in most cases.

Yep your calculations look right ... but Skype is expensive to SA when compared to say MWEB;

SA Landline: R 0.50
SA Cell peak: R 1.45
SA Cell off-peak: R 1.25

Plus Skype rounds charges up to next minute interval, while MWEB is per second from the first second (results in even bigger savings)

Also from a quality point of view, Skype calls use your own (shared & congested) international ADSL bw, while MWEB calls are all local (~ 20ms) from user perspective .... calls are regenrated and transited overseas by MWEB on QoS fiber bw.

Unfortunately MWEB only offering to SME businesses on post-paid (credit vetted) basis ATM .... consumer/SOHO pre-paid product scheduled for Apr/May timeframe.

to have skype for a month and not use it is free, to have mweb for a month and not use it is not free, you ahve to make a whole lot of calls for skype's monthly cost to get to mweb's one. also skype is used by millions, mweb, propably used only by direct family of mweb staff who gets "special rates" and who has no brain

Its true mweb want to lock you in but for a small business its hardly a bad deal. For R49 p/m for 2yr you get a new Billion 7402VGP voip/adsl router which retails for ~R1500 ... you do the maths.

Doubt that many in SA ... anyway things will change when mweb voip enable their ~45000 adsl subscribers for mahala.

This is more or less what I was looking for.

So once again there is not really a clear winner here. Seems like I will still have to dine on Telkom's horrible menu for a little while longer.

Just remember for the skype out rates we don't pay vat as we are not in the EU. Noticed you used to vat inclusive rates for skype out.
