Skyrim

Oculate, this is so irritating:

I found a sceptre in a cave last night that has a soul steal enchant on it, but it won't let me disenchant the damn thing. So I still have to whip it out mid fight it seems. :/

Also, it seems the dude inside the warmaiden shop in Whiterun sells a bow with the soul steal enchant on it, but for 2200g. Problem is, I already enchanted my flawless glass bow with a health steal enchant...and it doesn't seem possible to re-enchant an item once it's been enchanted.

Should I make a new bow? I'm guessing weapon enchants have charges and gear enchants don't...is that right?

Just for your FYI

Staves, quest items and some unique items cannot be disenchanted. (Example; Staff of Fireballs, Dragon Priest masks are debatable)

Found that here

As for what you wanna do, that kinda your choice ;) Personally, my bow has soul steal with 1 second (You don't need more) and lots of charges, and whe I get life steal, I will put that on my battle axe. I figure that there is more chance of losing health face to face then at a distance.

Voicy what I ultimately did was carry around 2 bows. One had my soul steal enchant and the other was my general purpose bow. I'm sure you know how enchanting works, but when you do it, try and have a Grand/Black soulgem to get the max out of your enchantment.

And yes, enchants on armour will be 'always on' whereas weapons will generally be 'no. of charges'.

EDIT: Keeping your weapons charged becomes a lot easier after you've done Azura's quest.

Ah suck. So my health leach enchant is stuck on my bow now. :/

It make sense, I was considering the same setup of running 2 bows, 1 for lulz and 1 for proper fights. Thing is, in caves and pretty much anywhere, people die on the 1st shot with my bow. So it might be worth my while to slap the soul steal enchant on a nice boy that I can use most of the time and keep my better bow for later. Then again, instead of buying that bow to disenchant it for the soul steal enchant, I may as well just refine the bow and use it as is.

I get the gist of how the enchant gems work, the better the gem, the better the charge (amount of souls etc.) I've done Azura's quest, but I still don't understand how I'm supposed to use it.

Well if you get your enchant up to 100, check what the perk is up there ;) My enchant will never get there though, so I just run 2 bows.... Yeah in the case of those gems, it will either increase the number of charges or increase the effectiveness of the enchantment.

Azura's star can work one of two ways, depending on who you finished the quest with. What happens then, is when you kill something (again depending on the star you have) with Soul steal active on said target, you should see the soul come towards you, but if not, you also get a message telling you you've trapped the soul.

When your item starts running low on charges, open your inventory and browse to the item you want to recharge. I'm not sure what the command is for consoles, but you push 'T' on the PC version and it brings up a list of fulled (containing a trapped soul) gems which you can then click on to recharge your weapon. Normal gems get consumed in the process (lost forever after use) but Azura's start never gets consumed. You can trap as many souls as you like.....

I'm sure there is also an enchantment skill later on, where you can enchant an item twice? That will be crazy awesome.

I need to finish off Azura's quest. These little soul gems are just not doing it for me. . .

Check the perk for level 100 :)

You can. I enchanted a sword with both fire damage and soul trap. Got rid of it afterwards because it kept giving me messages that I don't have a soul gem big enough when I kill anything. Now I just run with two legendary, unenchanted daedric swords and use Elemental Fury for a quick attack. Three strikes in less than a second and it kills off most things.

Maces have a higher base damage than swords, depending on how strong your Elemental Fury is, you could compare damage vs speed after using that shout

In light of that, I removed perks from the Sword +crit in One handed and moved them to the Mace ignore armor

Ah, makes sense...now...can I select Azura's star for only 1 item? E.g. if I select it for my soul trap bow, it can trap the biggest souls, but can I also use it to enchant my 2ndary bow?

I know it doesn't get consumed, but does it get locked by a weapon when you enchant it? If that is the case and yousell that weapon later, will the Azura then free up again?

To the best of my knowledge (I'm not that far into the game yet) The stone can be used on as many weapons at the same time as you want. The stone itself is not getting assigned to the item, just the soul that it carries. . . The better the soul in the stone, the better the enchantment it will have. If you have a little petty soul in it, your enchantment will be weaker. . .

^This.
I have enchanted my whole armor set using just the star. Obviously need to get a new soul each time.

The soul in star get consumed everytime you charge / enchant an item, then when u next soultrap sometihng into the star you can recharge / enchant something else. Its basically a rechargable soulstone. Normally using a soulstone consumes the soul and stone. With the star it only uses the soul but not the star.

Got it?

Oh I'm a level 30 sneaky / archer / mage / thief / assassin type who currently has designs on the emperor, and is working on learning how to build some decent armour, Arch Mages cloak cannot stop anything

:)

So I'm guessing it can only store one soul? And if you get a silly little wolf soul in it, you have to use it before you can stick that giant soul into it? Or can it contain more then one?

One soul at a time, if u have a black star it will only store grand (humanoid) souls, the white version will store any soul up to but not including Grand.

The cleansed Azura's Star can hold Grand souls, but it can't hold black souls. So you can't capture humans with it.

To summarise what the other guys have said, effectively it works like any other soulgem, just instead of being consumed on use, it stays in your inventory.... so:

* Azura's star can only hold one soul at a time
* Thus if you want to recharge 3 items and Azura's star is empty, you would need to kill 3 creatures/humans
* The size of the soul in Azura's stone doesn't carry over. If you have a grand soul and you use it to fill up one charge, the rest of the soul is lost, you need to trap another soul to recharge again.
* The amount of charges that the soul replenishes is soul dependant. Ie Petty = few recharge, Grand = lots of recharge
* The star isn't locked to any item. You can recharge any number of items you have in your inventory that requires recharging.

That's all I can think of..... feels like I'm forgetting something....
