Hi there

Does any1 use skyrove..? If so please post some +/- info

I'm in the process of setting up a WLAN to share dsl with a few friends...

I just have a few concerns...:

1) Is skyrove hosted in SA or overseas?
2) Does skyrove itself use much bandwith?
3) Does skyrove block any ports or does it use ICS?
4) Do I charge ppl in rands and then is it converted into USD?
5) Does skyrove also calculate lan traffic?? I hope not because that would be expensive if I had to copy a big file accross my wlan!

Thanks guys!!!

Hi headstrong,

1) We have hosting at Hetzner & in San Diego
2) We've heard different reports. But you can figure in about 5% of bandwidth use for Skyrove.
3) No, Skyrove does not provide the actual bandwidth so therefore does not block any ports. It doesn't use Windows ICS.
4) You set a price in credits. 1 credit is equiv to 1 US cent.
5) No, Skyrove does not count LAN traffic. (Though there are ways to do this if you really want to)

1 credit for 1 us cent is quite expensive if it minimun cost is 5 us cent per meg...

I want 2 use skryrove to share adsl with a few friends and ther is no way that they are going to pay 50 USD per gig!!! we will each be using atleast 1 gig per month!!!!!

There will be no casual customers like at a coffee shop who would only use a few MB and therefore not care about the price... We will be using GIGZ!!!

Your website advertising that I can set the charge per mb!!!!!! I want to set the price to be 1 south african cent per megabyte not 5 US dollar!!!!!

Is there anyway to charge 1 SA cent per meg instead of rediculassly high minimum of 5 US cents!!

Hope you understand

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback, headstrong.

So far, no one has been charging less than 10 credits per MB, therefore the lack of options on the interface.

I'll be adding in all amounts between 0 & 10 credits within this week. Will that work for you?

That sounds slightly better henk, :)

But heres my situation....

My friends and I are wanting 2 share the costs of adsl + isp charges
We are already having to pay for adsl line rental + isp charges and all we really need is 2 keep track of how much we actually use...I'm not really trying to sell it to them

However, maybee later on when things straighten out and brandband is SA becomes cheaper, laws beomce better, I will definetly want to sell my hotspot internet @ 10 cents a meg the public! But for now it's just me and my peeps!!

Is there a way to have different prices per/meg for different users? Or even a price per meg ( hotspot users ) or a price per gig ( share between my friends )

Hope you understand!

James

Hi headstrong,

I do understand your situation! After all, I wanted to pretty much the same thing 3 years ago, nothing was available, so I just built it myself.

But I admit, it's not perfect for everyone...

In any case, we have a usertype that you can define as a Privileged User. Currently you can only have one Privileged User, but it's still considered beta so email me if you'd like to "test" it and I'll give you 2 or 3 more. You can now track what the Privileged Users usage is.

We're working on having different rates for different users, but it's not an immediate priority.

Our main aim is to have something that is simple and that most people can easily understand, rather than something that does everything under the sun.

A good alternative to Skyrove may be Sputnik. They charge a flat monthly fee and allow more customization.

headstrong, a solution to your problem might be to setup an IPCop box and install the traffic and controll addon, that way you can see exactly how much bandwidth each computer is using and you can even set limit for each PC. ;)

nGAGEd55,

I'm busy working through all the technicallities of chillispot but it is very technical!

The reason I've come to skyrove is because it is

I take my hat off to you henk!! I'm only 17 so "building" something on my own is would be pretty hard, nevermind setting up a wlan with a few friends!!

I'd like to try your beta privalleged users thing :) That way I can share dsl with my friends and I could also open up my hotspot to the public at the same time!

Thanks again!
