Sleep or shutdown

During the day my home pc's stands by itself what is better to shut it down or put it to sleep until i come home after work? I am running vista ultimate.

Shut down, why waste the juice?

Why take the chance of losing your data if there's a power failure?

Why take the chance of blowing something with the surge that happens when the power comes back on?
