Lately at night a few minutes after falling asleep I suddenly awake with a rapidly beating heart and a sharp pounding pain in my chest..what is it?

You may have a hiatus hernia. Try sleeping on more pillows than usuall, Also avoid eating late at night.

Myocardial infarction? Sounds like it could be very dangerous, I'd get that checked out because you don't want it coming down to that.

I have the same thing, but noticed that it only happened when I had a bit too much beer to drink, and then go to bed.

Don't know if it has any relevance on your situation though. But since I have stopped drinking beer, I have never had it again.

I used to know what the name was of the condition, but yes, beer destroyed my short term memory, but its best to get to the local sawbones, just to make sure its all fine

Sounds like panic attacks to me. If you're suffering from stress and anxiety you need to deal with that and find ways to get into a relaxed state before sleep. Quit caffeine. Hot baths. ambient music. Check out melatonin supplementation. Exercise daily. research apnea. See a doctor!

I had a similar experience. Really bad heart pulpitations, went to the dr and found out that I had systematic lupus. Please go to the dr and check it out - don't play around with stuff like that

No luck..all cardio specialists are booked full till March..

uh oh, those cardio specialists are probably going to do an EPS (electro-physiological study) on you if you present to them with palpitations. I had that once and it is THE most terrifying and horrible thing. While you're awake they insert an electrode in your femoral artery in your groin and push it up to your heart. They then zap your heart with electric charges and check if you go into arrhythmia.

Hope you're only joking:(
