If you have a motherboard that supports X-fire but it doesn't state that it supports SLI can you pop in Nvidia cards and vice versa or does the mobo need to be SLI and X-fire supported?

AFAIK, like with the x58 mobo, intel(read motherboard manufacturers) has to pay nvidia or buy something from nvidia to have sli support on their mobo.

But to answer your Q, without hax, a xfire mobo will not support sli and vice versa, unless it is specified by the mobo maker.

Download the tool and see if it works. Should be able to go through all the steps and verify its working, but I've never done it and only skimmed through the instructions so I'm not sure. Remember to create a restore point in Windows in case something goes wrong.
