I have a mb that supports SLI, so I figure I might as well make use of it.

Do I have to purchase 2 of the same gfx cards now, or can I purchase one card now and add a diffrent model later on?

Seeing as they work in tandem I reckon it's a better idea to get 2 of the exact cards. You will also notice that you get stanard and SLI cards. Obviously with the SLI capabilities.

thanks, that is pretty much what i figured. i'll stick with my current PCI graphics card until i can afford 2xPCIe SLI cards.

the new nvidia drivers allow you to mix cards from different manufactures (Asus, Sparkel etc), as long as they are of the same type eg 2X6600GT
