Sli Motherboard

I want to buy the Asus maximus extreme 3 and pop two GTX470's in sli in there. Now my issue i have is that i also want to put on a after market cooler onto both cards but these coolers require a minimum of three slots a piece so i will need to place the second GFX card in the third PCIe slot. Would putting the card in the 3rd slot still give me SLi PCIe 16X16 or will i only then run 16X8?

It doesnt matter which PCIe slot (the red ones) you use on that mobo if you have two GPUs. Both will run at full x16 speeds.

finally found this review http://http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/3193/asus_maximus_iii_extreme_p55_express_motherboard/index3.html but it seems the third slot is a no go zone. but the fourth and fifth ones are fine to use. problem is will the Sli connector/ribbon work then?

I would but the Sli bridge connector will not be long enough.

Which SLI connector do you have, the two slot one? If so then using the 3 slot aftermarket cooling you're screwed anyway. You'll need to try and find a flexible 3 slot SLI bridge (not the tri SLI bridge that should've come with your mobo).
