I have recently had my ADSL line upgraded to 1024/4096 and am not getting the speed I should be, even with the local Telkom speed test. The best download I can manage is around 250 k/sec when at 4096 I should be getting around 400 k/sec from what I work out.

Is anybody else experiencing this or have any suggestions? My ISP is WebAfrica.

Thanks,
Russell.

Have you checked what speed your modem is syncing at? You might not be at the maximum speed. Also, the 4096 connection is quite inconsistent with what speeds you get. Some sites give you 400+ kb/sec and others only 45kb/sec. Hope this helps.

I must say, a similar thing has been happening to me too and Im also on webafrica. But when I used another non webafrica account then it seemed to fly. go figure. Im not too happy about it and i wish I knew why it was like that cause WA has always been solid before this month.

Hi, and thanks for the reply.

I think this may be the problem. I have a Microcom router which I access using the Conexant browser software. I see that under the ADSL status the "Data Rate" showing 2496 Down and 352 Up.

Is this a router setting I can change?

Nope that is the speed you'll get unless you can get closer to dslam. Maybe call telkom and tell them you are not syncing at full speed, they could still be limiting the speed.

From my testing the last week using download managers and modem syncing at 4096 and using webafrica prepaid shaped and unshaped accounts

It appears to me that the Shaped Webafrica account runs up to about 250KB/s during the day in the week and then goes to 430KB/s after 17:10

Single threads run around 50KB/s

The Unshaped account seems to run at about 430KB/s most the time
I havent tested its single thread speed

I dont like speed testers, I only use actual speeds reported by download managers
