how fast connections do you guys get on a 512 link with telkom internetaccount.

Got a 512 but never reached over 380, and telkom is full of lame excuses

440ish mostly...

Try setting your brower's proxy to dsl-cache.saix.net:8080

How will this help his line speed?

Your line speed is approximately 404.8 Kbps or 49.6 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

Results:
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 10.078 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 404.8 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 49.6 (kiloBytes/second)

With proxy:

Your line speed is approximately 424.6 Kbps or 52 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

been trying with the proxy but not really any change in speed.

maybe telkom just gave me a 384 line, wouldnt be surprised.

Hi ptr_strauss

In which area do you stay?
The reason I'm asking is that I have EXACTLY the same problem. The Telkom technician came to my place to test the line and he agreed that my line was slow (340Kb/s), I've got a 512 line. They changed me to a different DSLAM port at the exchange and it temporarily fixed the problem. I had decent line speed for a couple of days but now I'm back on DSL 384 speed again

I'm in the Bryanston/Rivonia area.
A telkom tech will come out during next week so we'll se what he says.

The further switch or Bridge the slower the connection you get, try switching to gold leads instead of copper, gold should give a faster connection.
If not, try to get another connection

I have never used the proxy before...just a quick question...Is access to the proxy is also blocked when you reach your cap?

No, you can still use it but speeds are pretty much the same as a capped account. It worked at full speed (after cap) until March or April last year when some idiot posted about it here. Within a few hours they fixed it.

Oh well, they would've caught on eventually anyway.

same applies to me, I am at the far end of the next DSLAM, maybe you have the same problem...

Got myself a new router today Billion 7402 so can now scrap the telkom one.
Managed to squezee more speed out of the Billion - now managing 400 Kbps aginst never more than 340-350 with peaks at 380 with telkoms router.
The Billion seems to disconnect/connect quite alot though, any suggestions about that?

try resting your router and updating your firmware.
If that dont work try switching another router(same one, replace it):)
