After typing my username/password, it can take 5 minutes to register on the Telkom network. Makes no difference what ISP I connect with.

The registration to the Telkom server just takes time. I can make a cup a coffee. When switching between ISP's, it is a tedious exercise.

I have been told by Telkom staff to use another router (still the same) , reboot (wtf) etc etc. NO ONE AT TELKOM CAN SOLVE MY PROBLEM. Logged so many faults for this.

The problem started in December - use to connect immediately.

Anyone have any idea????

What happens when you remove the POTS filter on the line and connect directly to the Telkom wall-box with no POTS filter/splitter?

I've had almost exactly the same problem / issue for at least a year, maybe even 18 months by now. Only difference is that it doesn't take my connections 5 minutes to connect ; takes between 30 secs to a minute, usually.

Obviously connection to the ISP I have in the modem/router is immediate. But when I try connecting via dial-up / pppoe (correct?) - bottom right of Windows 7 screen, where all my ISPs connections are listed, that's where it takes longer than it used to, which was only a few secs. before this started happening.

Decided to do the POTS filter test, as suggested - I have 3 of them around the house. When the main one - which is obviously where the ADSL line comes into the house - was disconnected, I lost both DSL and Internet lights on my modem/router, which in fact is a new one - D-Link 2740U. Only when I reconnected that POTS filter, did the green lights return to normal.

I had an older D-Link 2500U (connected to a TP-Link router) until a month ago, and same scenario - time spent waiting for the dial-up connections to make contact. So it's definitely not the fact that a modem/router is the cause of this. I've a spare POTS filter which came with the new modem/router, and will swop it and test, but am inclined to think it's something Telkom did at the exchange with the ports.

By the way, I had my port / profile reset when I put in the new modem/router & that didn't make any difference.

EDIT : after some checks, it seems as if ADSL line comes in not where originally thought. Swopped that filter for a newer Telkom one, and it still takes at least 30 secs to connect. Can't test using one that came with the modem, as it's only the filter ; doesn't have the in-built cable coming out the one side like Telkom's do.
