Hey all, my adsl was fine untill the middle of last month (when I got capped). Since I got back on this weekend, the speed has been significantly slower (about half of what it should be infact).

Some info: 192K ADSL, TelkomInternet account, One of those crappy marconi modems that telkom give you. JHB area.

Speed Tests:
Speakeasy:
Download Speed: 103 kbps (12.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 151 kbps (18.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Telkom:
* Download time: 43.64 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 93.5 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 11.5 (kiloBytes/second)

My pc is freshly formated so I doubt it's a software problem (same speeds on my laptop anyways), and no-one else seems to be having this problem, any ideas/advice?

have you tried switching it off for a few minutes (5-10 mn) and then switching back on and letting it re-synch? if it still does that then perhaps phone their tech support number 0800 375 375

sounds like an exchange problem to me.

I had exactly the same problem, and telscum had to do something at the exchange to sort it out.

Haha, this is just too funny... and sad. So I've been arguing with telkom for nearly 3 weeks now about my speed, and this is where I am now:

Couple of days after I logged the fault with them, they send out a techie, he hooks up his laptop and his own modem at my place, gets the same results as me on the speedtest. He says he's gonna check out my port and stuff at the exchange and phone me back the following day, he never phoned back.

During the next week and a half or so I get the occasional call asking me if the line is fine (NO!), various people promise me they're gonna check it out and phone me back, surprise NONE of them phone me back.

Finally today they send out another techie, this genius just sits here for 5 minutes and looks at the marconi performance monitor thingy and then just tells me its an isp problem: I usually get capped, and thus my ISP has limited my account speed (LOL! I just couldn't help laughing at that one), so just for interest sake I phone telkominternet, they let me try that guest account thing, big surprise, still the same speed. Now they've passed the problem back to the techies (sigh).

I seriously cannot understand how so many people can be so stupid. I'm just fed up with these damn people.

Whats interesting though is that my upload speed (Upload Speed: 151 kbps (18.9 KB/sec transfer rate)) is fine, so its only the downloading thats crippled.

Sorry for the great wall of text, but I just felt like venting, any ideas? :(

If you check out the WAN configuration option in the gateway (where your ISP username and pass is) just check at the right hand bottom, it says MTU and MRU and MSS, I changed my MTU and MRU (to the same value) and my browsing is much faster, downloading http @ 55kb (ADSL 512)

Get optimal MTU http://help.expedient.com/broadband/mtu_ping_test.shtml

uhm the techie is suppose to check with his uber guest acc which should give with >75 to 80% of line speed(if no problems). I wonder what the problem could be if they haven't detected a fault yet.

Thats a great story afflicted. I wish thing like this were exposed more often. Their service is "broken" or atleast having faults and they blatantly lie to you.

Even before that they dont ever call you back.

Its also rediculous, do ISP's ever limit line speed? Can they even limit line speed? Anyone who runs a ISP like to fill me in?

Well, got a call from telkom today informing me that there was indeed a network problem on their side (wow, what happened to everyone telling me its my isp?), said the technicians are attending to it, though that was quite a few hours ago.

Anyway *holds thumbs*
