I play singleplayer and the game runs mostly okay.

On-line though it can be quite jerky, especially when more players are on the server.

I have celeron 2.6ghz, 512mb ram, geforce fx5200.
Internet ADSL 384kbps.

is it my slow pc or is it my internet connection?

local or international server?

try turning off unnecessary applications such as antivirus, firewall, automatic updates etc and try again

if that doesnt work, and its an international server, theres prob not much you can do

check your ping as well...if your ping is high, that means its your connection thats the problem, if your FPS is low, this means your PC is the problem (usually)

512mb RAM for such a resource demanding game seems a little low to me

It's definately local, playing on sgs servers.

512mb ram is the minimum requirement for bf2, I know 5200fx is not on the support list but it does work, i run everything on low except view distance at 100%.

Maybe a dumb question but how do I tell whether it's low fps or connection prob? How do i know what my ping is? What would be a high ping?

To see if its FPS you can use something like FRAPS, it will show you the fps in one of the corners (you can select where) I dont have BF2 so I dont know if its got a built in FPS graph or somtehing. As for the pings, you will have to find out what the Server's IP address is by investigating a bit and visiting the website as sgs should have a list. It will look something like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where x could be any number eg. 192.168.0.1

What you must do next is open a DOS command prompt by either clicking on Start -> Run -> type 'cmd' in the box and hit enter or you can pres the Windows key (usually between alt & ctrl on your keyboard) together with the 'r' key. this will open the 'Run' box where you can type cmd and hit enter.

Once you have the DOS window open you have to type 'Ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -t' where xxx is the IP address of the server you connect to... e.g. 'ping 192.168.0.1 -t' (the -t option tells the pc to keep on pinging otherwise it will stop after 3 pings) Once again, I don't know if BF2 has a built in feature to check pings.

Now good pings for a local site will be anything from 20 to 80ms, higher than that and you might 'lag out' and most other players with lower latency will be sending their data to the server faster so they will probably kill you before you even see them :( for international servers a good ping will be anything from 200ms to 350ms.

Pm me if you still struggle, and btw dont use any '' when typing commands...

easier ways

in bf2 press ~ to bring up the console
type in

"renderer.drawfps 1"

then it will displau the FPS in the top corner

hold down tab to bring up the player screen and you can see your ping there, below 60 will be fine.

you machine is rather underspec and playing on the bigger maps like the sgs servers will cause lots of disk caching, even with 1GB ram u will experience it. The lag you have is almost 95% surely to be your underspec machine.

The servers do suffer from lag occasionally , 5 seconds or so of bad lag but then they are fine afterwards

Could be that on single player there is a max of 16 people (AI) on the map, on SGS there is a max of 44-64 people on the map with a huge amout of action.

Only thing I could suggest then is mabey some more RAM better GPU [you have a Celeron so I guess DDR400 - 512Mb - R330 and perhaps a better display card you can pickup a 6200 - 256Mb - R650 / X1550 - 256Mb - R650 at prophecy.co.za]

If you are not getting bad FPS...

You say you have 384k DSL perhaps your ISP is shaping your traffic, I have 64k and cannot use steam or play GW anymore it is so bad :(

From experience I will tell you for sure it's your PC holding you back and causing jerkiness.

512MB is far too low, your processor is too low and your GFX is too underpowered. Sorry but there it is. I used to play on a 512MB laptop with some weird assed card and it was hectically jerky, and once the server got over say 20/25 players it was too much.

The only thing I can suggest is that you turn everything to low, and try not to get into the middle of major firefights (all that shooting and running etc puts a major drain on your PC)

Alternatively what you can do is join a map when no one is playing, go everywhere and have the GFX cache all the textures etc.. This reduces somewhat the jerkiness, but requires you to spend an hour or so doing nothing on the server while it gets going (playerwise)

Also stick to Urban maps, they are smaller and theres less for your PC to process (planes, heli's etc..)

Really the only soloution in the long run is to get more ram (2GB preferably) or upgrade your GFX card

Thanks for your opinions.

I'm sure it's my PC, I tried playing on my friends 4096 line, which runs it fine on his PC, and it still lagged with me. It's also definately worse with more players on the server.
I can see by the HDD LED that it's also caching to disk, like bboy said it might be.

i dont think your cpu is to slow as much as your memory and vga card

get more memory and a better vga card

Depends on what type :) I think w/ his CPU/Mobo he has still got DDR333/400 :)

True that....

I paid R2k for my OCZ reapers 1066 in June. I see you can get them for... oh 2k still. Looks like a got a 'bargain' back in the day lol

lol DDR2 667/800 is cheap! DDR400/333 is exspensive now... :(

If I get anything, it will be nearly whole new system:
Misc. R700 mobo
AMD x2 3800+
HD3850
at least 1gb ram
