Slow connection when used in phone only

I have a question about using Afrihost SIM in my phone. I have dual sim phone, so though I'd try it in there as a second sim, and set the phone to use SIM2 as default data connection... All of that works fine, but when setting the phone as a hotspot, I did a test download from a local FTP server and could only manage around 40KB/s download speeds. Putting the sim back into the MiFi unit, I get over 2MB/s from the same server.

So my question.. has anyone else tried this, and is there anything special one has to to with a phone to get the same speeds?
