I wonder if anyone else has experienced this issue which seems to affect only MSWord, MSEcxel and html files :

When trying to load a file by double or right clicking from its location in explorer or desktop, the app takes a minute or two to load, and the file opens about 15 seconds later. Conversley, if you open the app first, it opens immediately and opening the file from the file menu is instantaneous.

To add to the confusion, this phenomenon only manifests itself if you have acessed the internet since bootup - i.e. as long as you haven't accessed the internet, then you can load any of the above-mentioned files lightning fast by double-clicking on them in explorer (or wherever they are). You only have to access internet once, to bring about the slow opening issue.

Have searched far & wide for a solution - tried suggestions like changing the dde settings in the file associations, deleting and re-registering the file types in folder options, disabling antivirus, running spyware checkers etc., but no joy. Have also tried running MSOffice detect & repair but stopped short of un & reinstalling.

The other funny thing is that, from time to time, the problem seems to correct itself, only to crop up again later. I had it about eight months ago and then one day it just went away. Now its been back with me for two weeks or so.

Anyone ???

defrag?

What kind of hard drive? Size? File System?

How much RAM do you have?

Had thought of a defrag but XP says I don't need one.
Running sata 160 drive in Fujitsu Siemens notebook with 2 Gb RAM
This doesn't seem to be a hardware issue as the files open instantaneously when opened from within the running app, and also when double-clicked from explorer, provided I haven't run IE during the boot session.

Slow file opening - puzzled !!

Many thanks you guys for all the constructive input.

I have already tried pretty much everything that has been suggested, including solutions posted at Techarena, Experts Exch & various other sites, as well as Microsoft.

I really didn't want to waste your time - was just hoping someone out there had had a similar experience and found the problem.
