What the heck. Can anyone please explain.

I am in JHB with a 4mg line, using telkom as my ISP. My best friend stays in CT, with a 4mg line using webafrica as his ISP. We both download locally at round about the same speed (+/- 420kB/s). Tonight we downloaded a mappack from the same international site, except my speed was 40kB/s and his was a blisteringly fast 550kB/s.... what the heck. How? What? This is not the first time. It seems that he gets awesome international DL speeds, while myself, using TELKOM, get crap speeds. I am lost for words...

Maybe add a traceroute to the site you 2 were downloading from, could help, show packet loss and the route the packets probably took.

<-- EL also have dload sppeds of ~50 kb/s with a 4 meg.

Unually high traffic due to Elections and IPL causing a bottleneck???

@Preacher, why are you double posting this thread..
A few nights ago you posted this exact post, i remember reading it

"There is currently a Telkom SAIX outage between Hongkong and Rosebank.
All ADSL users, Dialup users, SpaceStream users, Leased Line users, WiMax users, WiFi users may experience slow international browsing.
Telkom's international provider is investigating into the matter." -- Webafrica

Thanks, mine was dead slow too on browsing, but funnily enough video was reasonable.

me too, I'm timing out on most intl pages, have an upto 4MBps line. can't use normal gmail page with the chat thingy which i usually use for work. I've not been able to send my work over since it's a largish file, over 20 MB and pages like yousendit keep timing out. video does not work at all. I am with Webafrica and they say this issue is resolved under the alerts page but doesn't look that way
