Slow LAN after power outage?

Have an odd one I would like to put out there and see if anyone could shed some additional light on a wee problem I have with the office LAN of late.

On Monday there was a 3 minute power outage at the office. The server and most of the PCs have UPS's so they remained on during the power outage but equipment such as ADSL router / LAN printers and LAN switches went down and came back up when the power resumed.

As a rule I had the users all log out so I could reboot the server and thereafter everyone logged back onto the domain (DHCP) again.

Since then the LAN is still accessible but its just really really really really slow ito processing requests on the server with the retail software we use. Also LAN printing is dog slow in some parts of the building to non-existent in others although everyone is still on the LAN (tested by checking email and browsing the web.)

I suspect its one /all of the LAN switches playing up having maybe blown a cap or two during the power up, does this sound logical? Or does it sound more virus-ie?

Check in taskmanager if its running at 10mbps.

One some switches, one device at 10mbps can pull everyone down to 10mbps.

I suggest turning your switches and router off for about 2 minutes (unplug if possible, otherwise just switch off).

I've had this problem at a previous company, the switches aren't busted, they just didn't communicate to your DHCP server properly when switching back on.

We had the same problem last week, turned out it was a single users PC whose nic displayed 10mbs even after reinstalling drivers.

Replaced the nic and everything was back to normal.

My laptop LAN operates at 10mbs when not connected to the charger. I believe it's a battery power saving setting somewhere. Maybe check a couple of PC's or laptops or router or switch to make sure they haven't for some reason switched to 10mbs.

Hey there is a new one - 10mb connection - i remember seeing someone glowing orange on the switch liggies, great thanks chaps, I will investigate Monday.
