When I play Counterstrike I would always get an average ping of about 20ms. This was recorded in the game stats of Counterstrike on the saix servers. For no reason at all, this ping went up to 50ms at the beginning of March . At the time I thought it was just a short term thing and that it would eventually go away. No such luck. Anyway, adsl in our area would frequently not work on a Sunday morning, but this fault would normally be repaired by about 11 o'clock. I would always kid the Telkom helpline that they should find the guy who came on duty and tell him to stop fiddling.
This latency thing was really beginning to bug me so I began the process of working my way through the various levels and ignoring the stock answer that there is no guarantee with adsl. I must admit that everybody that promised to get somebody to respond to my complaint did come through. Everytime somebody would phone me back and eventually I reached what I imagine is the actual Saix backbone.
This person said that the reason that I had such a slow ping was that she thinks that I was being routed via Durban. They said that they were upgrading equipment and that I would eventually be brought back to JBG.
This last Sunday my adsl was down again. I imediately phoned Telkom and they worked through the Three R's. Reload, restart and runaway. When he came back he said that there was a problem in the whole of the Edenvale area and more people were phoning in.
I patiently waited the whole day for them to repair the fault. Everytime I phoned the help line, the same recorded message came up. "<font face="Century Gothic"></font id="Century Gothic">We are currently experiencing a problem in the etc. etc. etc areas."<font face="Arial"></font id="Arial">
Finally, late that night, my adsl connected and miracle of miracles, my ping was back down to 20ms. I immediately hit the counterstrike servers and it wasn't long before I felt the coldness from my fellow players. How had I suddenly improved. What cheats was I using.
Would anybody like to explain what was the real problem with my ping?
