Slow local pings?

Hi Guys

I have been playing CS again... on and off but since last week I would say the pings on local sites have been... unstable to say the least my last 60 packet ping came back as following:
Packets: Sent = 60, Received = 60, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 40ms, Maximum = 237ms, Average = 56ms

usually around 40-41ms but every 10 packerts or so I get a spike of up to 200 even 400ms. Doing a trace root the first time seems fine then the 2nd time my 2nd hop and 4th hop shows a ping spike

Anyone else having this issue? I'm in DBN North area a little help would be appreciates.

My ping is still in the 40ms range but I'm in the Cape Town area.

Edit: Have you maybe been downloading unknowingly (like a virus etc?) That's what usually what causes ping spikes.

I'm in Durban South, but have suffered from relatively poor local pings from the first day:

My pings are pretty stable - the problem lies in the poor latency I get on hop 2 - from my house to the exchange I assume?

Anyhow I've shelved any local FPS games for now and moved onto Guild Wars...so at least latency is less of an issue
