Slow SMB via VPN

I'm having slow SMB browsing over ADSL with Mikrotik PPTP connections that are not connected to a Domain Controller. Both sides are on a 10Meg connections and ping times are below 50ms on each side. All the pc's are Windows 7 based with "netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled" "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" disabled. I can’t seem to find the problem?

I have a suspicion it has to do with mtu. The smb mtu is bigger than mtu of vpn so it tries the bigger mtu and then renegotiates. Google that
