Slow speeds...

Had iburst for over a year now, used to be really fast... 512k on the telkom http speed test... now I get anything from 4-56k on the same test. Most of the time my pages just time out and say 'done' at the bottom, but they haven't loaded anything... I get a signal strength of between 80%-100%, which constantly fluctuates. I've just updated the firmware on my modem, which was a recommendation by someone the iburst tech centre, which has not helped. I run DrTCP with my MTU at recommended value. I am in a area with dark green (high indoor probability), but judging by the value of the signal strength, I doubt this is the issue.

I suspect that because of the new iburst marketing strategies, the is a sudden influx of millions of new subscribers, which are all 'bottlenecking' all the available bandwidth.

I find this unacceptable, unless I am totally wrong here... I should at least get the same access speeds not 10 times less after being a loyal subscriber.

Not to mention they forgot to debit my account last month, so in turn, debited it this month three times, great going guys.... now I've got to ask my collegues for a bite of their sandwich's...

Any thoughts on this matter would be appreciated...

Is it maybe a problem my side? Do I need an aerial now?

help please!

I've had very bizarre results from the Telkom test recently, when it works. Current conspiracy theory is that users with Telkom's ADSL gets a "boost" from the test, while access from other service providers are "downgraded". A new form of marketing?

What are your results on the Iburst speed test?

What are your download speeds?

Which basestation are you connecting to?

4-56kb is a bit insanely low... Sure you arent capped :p

Seriously, it could only be your basestation, but I dont know if it could really get that bad..

Is this a problem that has been going on for a while now or has it only very recently happened?

def. not capped, still have over 200mb left over, according to my daily usage report.

Has been fairly recent... although I def. have noticed a decline in speeds over the year...

Seems that I turned the little antenna in another direction, and I'm getting a better signal now (fluctuates between 96% to 100%)... this has improved things somewhat... but still am having issues:

1. Local sites are fine, fairly quick.
2. Certain overseas sites are almost impossible to load, they usually just time out, blank page and browser says 'done'
3. It takes me over 30 min to send a 138k email to [email protected]!! this is the second one I've sent... ridiculously slow... Using Outlook 2003, setup hasn't changed since the beginning.
4. Iburst speed test yields an awesome 64kbps

Not sure which basestation I'm connected to, but I've posted some scr's which will show my area, maybe that'll help... I installed 'Iconnect', but it doesn't work (says: Cannot change visible in OnShow or OnHide) and the (Socket error # 10060. Connection timed out), then opens the window, but displays no info... seems like the beta needs much more tweaking.

Oh yeah, and to top it off, I am now getting up to 15 spam emails a day... seems like some sudden worm, each email from a different 'person', all usually explicit vulgar porn stuff, or viagra / stocks spam.... very annoying, been going on for over 2 months, now, and I've been constantly sending iburst these mails with the headers.... but nothing has been done.

It could be that a virus/worm is secretly draining your cap. Have you ever experienced a sudden loss of bandwith?

Well, with 90% plus signal and a speed test of 64kb local I'd once again check if you arent capped! Maby just unplug the modem for a few minutes and try stuff out again, 64kb cant be right...

Try using UTTracestar instead of iConnect, and remember to set your IP of the connection which connects to the iBurst modem to 192.168.250.1
And you can only use this through USB, PCMCIA, or Ethernet. So if you are connected through a router it wont work.

From that map it seems that there are a few towers in your area. Using UTtrace star to make sure you are on the best one would be a good idea. A very important factor is the tower load which you can check in UTts, so a tower that still has worse signal (provided its still reasonable) but a lower load could even be better.

Those time outs don't seem right either... There must be something seriously wrong with your connection, even if you were capped pages wouldn't time out or anything. Maby try emailing Ed Hall at [email protected]

to tell you the truth I cant really remember, I never took too much notice of the frame error rate, because in the beginning it was quick.

However, I did speak with the supervisor this afternoon at the helpdesk, and was advised to purchase an omni aerial. I will do this at the end of the month and see if this improves things. Another possible thing to note is that I have recently moved to a new premisis, although the speed was degrading at my old premisis too.

thanks for all the comments, and help guys, will let you all know what the outcome is.

Make that windsurfer??? Huh?

ja, go windsurfing dude. It'll get all these silly iBurst worries out of your head.

Anyway.. seriously, a windsurfer ( I have no idea why they chose that name either) Is just a little home made version of an antenna, sort of. It just uses your normal UTD but amplifies the signal by closing it up so that it can only "see" in one direction, therefore if you aim it at a tower, it shouldnt do any tower hopping, and the signal is a bit more focused because of the stuff your windsurfer is made of.. which is something that reflects signal.

I dont actually know much about these, im sure someone else will explain better.

When i moved, my new place had 0% signal (anywhere), once i installed the windsurfer my signal jumped to 100% with 0 frame rate error. My download speed test came back at 768kb
