Hi,

My Mecer router recently got fried by lightning and I got a Billion. If anything, it seems to be faster on downloading and browsing, but streaming is a lot slower. I might as well be on dialup when watching something on YouTube and it's driving me nuts! Are there any settings I can maybe go into to throttle up streaming?

Thanks

waterprism: if the router is synchronizing at the same line speed as your Mecer router, then its not supposed to stream videos any slower.

I think what probably happened is that they've placed you in a shaped pool. Lots of people are having shaping issues with the IS uncapped accounts.

Its always a good idea to test the download/streaming speed using a 1GB prepaid and unshaped account, since that will give you an idea of whether its your uncapped account thats being heavily shaped or if its a problem with the ADSL line/router.

Hi Pada,

Thanks a lot. I'm not on uncapped though. I'm on Cybersmart unshaped, so I don't think it's that. But the plot's actually thickened since I posted, leaving me totally confused. I really think the router is affecting streaming speeds, but to go with it, when it's late at night my download speeds have also suddenly gone south... get this... unless I pick up the land line phone! Okay, so if I'm downloading something and I'm getting like 5kbs or if streaming is crazy slow, if I just pick up the land line and leave the handset up, suddenly my speed and streaming speed improves to the usual 384 circuit 34kbs(ish). I just noticed this last night. Anyone ever heard of that ever? If I pick up the land line... my speed suddenly improves, and I mean dramatically and quickly. Wierdest thing ever.

It sounds to me like you're not connecting your phone and ADSL router via a microfilter/splitter that you can get from Telkom.

No, I do have a filter on all land lines in the house. Although if this kind of thing is related to that kind of thing, I might have to look at the filters. Thanks. It's strange that the problem only appears at night though. But thanks; I'll look into the filter issue.
