Slow Sync Speed

Hi,

Telkom are reminding me that sync speed is a best effort service - and I would like them to treat the slow sync as a fault. I was hoping for advice as to whether I should pursue it or not.

I had a 4Mb line in my previous property and always got full sync - since I moved I have been getting about 2.8ish. My new location has a 10Mb exchange, so I upp'ed the line to 10. Still getting about 2.8 (although the upload speed has obviously doubled to 1Mb).

I am only 1.5km away from the exchange (Rondebosch East, CT) following the roads, 1km in a straight line.

On one occasion when I called, the technical support lady asked me to reboot the modem while she did something, and it sync'ed at 3.8 - but dropped back down to 2.8ish the next time the modem restarted.

If I were further away, I would understand but surely 1.5km is close enough to get better than 2.8? If the line quality really is that poor, should they replace it or just claim 'best effort'?

Maybe the copper is just bad. Otherwise request a resync and port reset from 10210.

BTW: Have you tried a different router and checked filters?

It is the same equipment from my last place, which always sync'ed at maximum speed without fail.

If it is bad copper, do I just have to accept it? Copper quality variances are inevitable, but surely this is below an acceptable level and must be considered a fault?

I think it was a port reset the technical lady did for me when I temporarily got a 3.8 connection.

Try a line resync. Wouldn't hurt to test another router in case. Tell ICASA maybe?

DSL Noise Margin: 5.3 dB 6.0 dB
DSL Attenuation: 37.0 dB 21.0 dB
DSL Transmit Power: 0.0 dBm 12.9 dBm

Looks like a noise margin issue?

Ok, I have 3 phone points in the house and had previously tested 2 of them with the same (slow) result.

I just tested the other one and the Noise Margin reported closer to 12 dB and the line sync'ed at 10Mb :)

Unfortunately, this point is in a far flung corner of the house and I would rather not have to get range extenders etc involved.

Is there anything I can do (or Telkom should do) to the 2 slow points so I can get the same line quality from them?

Yeah they have to replace any faulty points in your house for free:) So give them a call and they should send a techie out to sort the problem.

37 attenuation is not bad. You should be able to get at least 4-6Mbps. The problem in your case is low downstream noise margin. Try rewire wherever you can with twisted pair (shielded if possible) cat5e cable. Ask the telkom techie to replace the cable from the pole to your demarc with the same cat5e cable. Check all phone jacks, and make sure all devices are using good quality POTS filters (buy new filters if you must). Try a D-link 2500u modem or Netgear DGN2200 - these work well for me

My modem has just yesterday started syncing at 767kbps (2mbit usually), a mere 6 days after the line was fixed.

In my opinion and past experience with Telkom, (which is extensive) this is a line fault issue again.

Can anyone offer some insight?

Thx

Despite high attenuation, your noise margins are good in that snapshot. If they were at that number when your line synchronized to the exchange, your Rate should never have been so low. Can you tell us whether those SNR margins are relatively stable, or are they fluctuating a lot during the day? Definitely looks like a line problem to me, or else a (very) bad ADSL modem. Will be able to advise further if you can send a couple more snapshots spaced a few hours apart

Force GDMT as the ADSL mode, and what router is that? It looks rather old.
