The data transfer rate on my old laptop is ridiculous. It's taken about 90 mins so far to copy 1.5gb across to the external HDD. Why so slow? USB 2 drivers are part of XP SP1 right? Got SP3 installed on the latop.

USB 2.0 drivers are part of XP sp1, but are the usb ports on your laptop USB 2.0? What laptop you got (specs)?

It's an Acer Travelmate 4200. Dual core machine from 2006. Surely it should have USB 2 ports?

It can be that the laptop still got USB 1.x ports.

Doesn't matter what service pack you've got installed, if the hardware is USB1.x, that's what you will get.

See my post above, Ook.

How do I check the ports?

So in Device Manager, I see 5 Universal Host Controllers, one of which says USB2 enhanced. Does that mean that only 1 USB port on my machine is USB2?
