Slow VM Data Speeds

My Virgin Mobile internet is unusable today. So I inserted my MTN sim into my data card.

It connected immediately and it took me 2 minutes to open this page to make a post. So now I wonder, at R2/MB I should get much better speeds but I don't. So I'd rather use Virgin Mobile and get disconnects every now and then at 50c/MB than paying R2/MB and get terrible speeds.
MtN has always been the MOST reliable and I make sure I have a voucher handy just in case.
This song and dance you make about 50c/Mb .... If I get a new SIM, load a R15 MtN voucher then a 10Meg data bundle (cost=R10) I still can download 30MEG. So for R15, I get 30Meg. Isn't that the same as Virgin??
[This is assuming you no longer have the MtN data 'bottomless data cup' effect:D :D ]
According to Skeptik the guys on Hellopeter complains because they say it takes ages to receive the new sims. I don't think they know about MYADSL.

Everyone on MYADSL who asked for new sims did receive it according to me. The reason I say so is because I asked everyone to please let me know if they don't receive the new sims and so far no-one said they didn't. And for those who did I forwarded their details to Virgin Mobile again as urgent and they did receive their sims.
Maybe you could also assist them on hellopeter :p So far all the positive VM comments are from someone with alias "Piesang". Now who would that be? ;)

Hi there Sean

If you are still waiting you can PM me your details again. I don't keep the details on my PC. I'll forward your details again as soon as I get it.

I'm not able to assist anyone on Hellopeter. The positive comments are from me yes because so far I really don't have something I can complain about.

I did mention MYADSL in some of the comments on Hellopeter with the idea of the other people getting the info and then go to MYADSL for more information.

It seems that there are some people that complained on Hellopeter that doesn't know about MYADSL and even after mentioning MYADSL on Hellopeter they still don't use the service.

Don't you know it's a best effort service, best Half Arsed South African effort.

I wouldn't rely on that if I were you as it never happened to me before. With Virgin however you always get that rate and don't have to wait a month to load a new data bundle.

I've been using a new sim every recharge for a long time. Always getting at least 30Meg (and more at the beginning with the Pick'nPay deal :p ). At R0.99 a sim (Shoprite), you don't have to wait for the next month, just use a fresh one every time, When you have 29, just recycle like a good citizen :D

With Virgin we don't have to keep track of our bundle, swap our sims all the time, keep track of them, search for lost ones, make a chargeable call every 3 months to keep them active. Saves me from a lot of hassles and the speeds are faster since I have edge coverage.

Don't waste your time answering Skeptik. He'll find a problem with everything.

"Of course you can't put your mobile in a drawer and never use it. If you are a Prepay Account holder and you don't top up or V Charge for a whole 90 days, we will have to assume that the relationship is over and zero your account. And if you don't V charge for another 30 days your mobile number and service will be cancelled." - FYI {Virgin Mobile}

Hey Piesang, as the self-appointed Virgin Rep, you should know things like that:p >> Virgin won't luv you anymore if you post anything negative.. << ;)

Why ask Piesang when I was the one who made the post? I knew that perfectly well when I made the post. If your use of Virgin is going to be anything worthwhile you are automatically going to recharge within 3 months time without even noticing it, but with 29 MTN sim cards I am not sure how you are going to know which one you made a call on and exactly when and even if you are using your card for data it could get cut off right there and then. Some of your sim cards might be a risk already.

I didn't make the post Skeptik. And yes, I do know that. That's why I V Charge every now and then. And with the speeds and stability I get since the weekend I am surely going to V Charge even more.:D

My Virgin Mobile connection in pta-east have been rather acceptable the last week or so; before that I had an immense amount of trouble. The Virgin Mobile guys were very helpful and I give them credit that some things are sometimes out of their hands because they have to wait for Cel-C.

I hope they will keep the improvement up - Thanks Guys.

Is the 128k sim better for data if I am using a gprs connection? My speeds on my 64k sim were good for the first 2 days and thereafter extremely slow.

I was using the normal SIM for data through my Nokia3220 and the speeds were reasonabe, EDGE.

The 128 SIM was only necessary for use with the MTN Data Card. I have not tried the 128SIM in the Nokia though.

I do not think it will make any difference if you connect through your phone.

Sean.

The first batch of 64k sims were not 100% compatible with a lot of data cards and your connection would either stall or disconnect right after being connected or you would get a data rate of a few bytes per second. If you did not experience any of this from the start then a 128k sim would not make any measurable improvement, but from someone's post it might actually be incompatible with your phone and cause your phone to have those symptoms. So the general rule of if it ain't broke don't try to fix it applies here and if you might need a new card in the future to use on a data card then rather purchase a 128k sim which should be available by then. :)

My speeds were very slow and erratic the weekend up to tuesday, but the rest of the week it seems to be great again. I wonder what changed.
