I like this sliding scale policy of the Swiss, that way the rich guys will really feel the pinch of their reckless driving. The R20k fines I've read about been given to local rich people are peanuts really and dont dicourage speeding...

Wait ... but then our taxi drivers who don't register themselves as employed would never pay anything, the hawkers wouldn't really pay what they're supposed, etc etc etc.
They'd be skipping out on taxes AND fines.

In our country, it would just be open to so much abuse its frightening. We need to get the Taxi's etc to bloody obey the rules of the road before we start implementing fancy systems like this.

Taxi drivers would not be paying the fines, the owners would. IMO, the owners will be fined, they will fire said driver, and eventually the message will get through to drivers that they must obey the traffic rules or they get fired.
And should the owners not pay up, the taxi is kept as security on that fine as the example above shows. Its a great idea!

Bad example, in this example, the taxi owner will be fined accordingly, and the taxi driver will probably lose his job, join an opposing taxi rank and start a war over routes.
But, a fine is supposed to hurt, as soon as a fine becomes a joke, you cannot enforce it.
i.e. You cannot fine a person who earns R2000 a month R50000, he'll laugh it off as pointless and rack up fine after fine after fine.

it will work where bad road behaviour is the exception, not the rule.
we need people here to self-police and not rely on the cops to be everywhere.... its simple impossible for them to watch everyone on the roads.
thats not to say the traffic police are competent in anything except speed trapping.

That won't happen in South Africa when you even have some prominent corporate structures condoning traffic offences such as speeding, etc. First we need to realise the danger we present to ourselves and others when breaking the law (Road Traffic Act), before anything as idyllic as that can happen.
