The wife drives a 2000 Polo 1.4i. Been serviced recently (by me, normal oil/filters/plugs service). Being a 1400 fuel injection, I expect from it, as it's helluva sluggish (as in driving up Hans Strijdom between Garsfontein and Genl Louis Botha in P-town in 2nd).

Is there anything pertinent I can look out for, or are they just slow?

Don't wanna pimp it... just fix it.

Look for vacuum leaks - there's a small vacuum pipe going from the intake manifold to the fuel rail on the water bottle's side of the engine. If that is broken or missing, the car will be sluggish at low revs and have very bad fuel consumption. Is the clutch still OK?
