We're a small office, about 9 people, likely to grow to about 11 people in the near future. We currently run off a paricular telephone system but the main system lies with our landlord which means we have a certain dependency on them. The system is too expensive for us to buy and we're not particularly happy with the system anyway. The choice of system has proved to be very challenging as all companies tell you what you want to hear. I've done some research on Telkoms HiPath Open Office ME. Has anyone got anything to share regarding this system?

Hi there
I really wish I could comment on the HiPath. It is a Siemens system and all I can say is that it is expensive and a bitch to get after sales service at a reasonable price. Generally all PABX solutions offer you the same functions ( basic functions that will meet 99% of your requirements). However... you may want to look at the NEC brand that offers (I) fair to great price, (ii) Up to date technology, (iii) National service facilities - (just another way to say that there are many-many companies that are accredited and well suited to offer after sales service.) (iv) - Facilitating up-to-date features such as VoIP, and a mean Telephone Management System.
So, I am quite willing to advise personally. Please keep in mind that - - - - if you lose one sales call a year --- it could cost you more than investing in a stable voice solution !

LOL, speaking of people trying to sell something...

Telkom is generally expensive but they actually provide pretty decent service on their business telephone accounts.

My Mom has used a ISDN line and a PABX they supply for years and she only had 1 incident where they took a long time to respond. Rest of the time it was pretty reliable and the service pretty good.

It all probably depends on the area. As for cost, well that is where the Telkom option sucks because it is quite expensive.

I worked for one of the 3 largest insurance companies in the country for a while. Ran a new telephone system they were bringing in to replace the costly and unreliable system they had before. We used Telkom as their fail over (which happened every other day). Telkom just never gave any problems. So yeah say what you will about their cost, their products are actually pretty decent in my opinion.
