Looking for a small router, that I can put between my Laptop and public Wi-Fi access points, and can be also used as a wired router at clients or friends. Would also like to, connect a Raspberry Pi to my side of the router, time to time. Trying to get myself a little extra protection, when on other peoples networks.

Look at the GL-Inet routers (https://www.gl-inet.com/).

They run OpenWRT, but with LUCI installed, they are simple enough to set up. They are powered via a microUSB connector, have WAN and LAN interfaces, as well as being able to act as an AP while connected to an upstream wifi connection as well. Depending on what you want, you can get versions with external antennae, storage via uSD, etc. They can also host a 3G modem via USB, for all sorts of connectivity.

Basically I want a router that will connect to Wi-Fi hots spots, Mugg & Bean, Telkom , hotel/guest house, and act as a barrier between my system and the big bad public wi-fi setup. I am not expecting water tight security, just lifting the difficulty barrier a reasonable amount.

Not heard of the products you have linked before, but will check them out.

Many thanks

Any portable router would do for some of your use cases, something running OpenWRT can be configured to work for most (if not all) of your use cases (depending on hardware interfaces). The Gl-Inet routers are nice because they have two ethernet ports, as well as USB host, which most portable routers do not.

Why not just get a VPS running OpenVPN? The connection from your laptop to the VPS is then encrypted and you only breakout onto the internet from your VPS

You know of anyone locally who sells them?

That protects only the connection, the rest of your system is still connected directly to their infrastructure, I want a barrier between their infrastructure and my system. Which does not exculde me from using a VPN tunnel as well, either.

Unfortunately not, I have ordered mine from China, I'm afraid. (Or Amazon in the US, when I have been over there)

I found this old BidOrBuy listing (http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/2148...USB_Powered_Smart_Router_w_16M_Rom_White.html), you may have joy if you contact the seller directly and ask if he has any more (or others).

Many thanks, have bought once or twice from China, and have gotten my stuff, even if it took, quiet awhile to get here. Will look around, and if nothing comes up, well, I will order direct.
