I am looking to set up a fairly lightweight system which really needs basic functionality so I can use it for it's SATA, serial and USB ports and need a really small SSD or a hard drive for dirt cheap (literally) and thought of the 2GB SSD in the old Asus EEE PCs.

Does anyone know where to find these SSDs or is there an alternative method of putting windows onto the PC with some sort of storage? - Trying to avoid going out and buying a HDD for R500.

You can load on OS onto a mem stick...but performance will suck something nasty.

You could boot off a network drive.

I'd grab a 2nd hand 40gig drive off the classifieds. Should go for like R100. Perf won't be great, but better than a flash stick.

I've heard about booting off a CF card and it was my second option after a SSD. Also contemplating booting off a network drive. I'm currently booting off a 256MB Kingston flash drive into FreeDOS which works but I still have other applications I need to use plus sharing of some content and providing an internet gateway for my XBox.

Also wondering how I can install Windows onto a flash drive? I've tried with a 16GB flash drive and it doesn't show up in the Windows 7 installation (NTFS, FAT32, FAT and exFAT)

I recently upgraded an old Win98SE setup with a 2GB compact flash drive which replaced an old 4.3GB with 2GB partition. Works a treat, nice and snappy too.

Is the PC going to be on all the time? Whats it going to be used for, sounds like a storage system? Paying R1200 for a SSD is a lot if you wont be using its capabilities

I really only need a working desktop. The PC will be seldom used (only when the XBox needs internet access - on weekends and when I need to format drives or when I'm doing firmware mods to XBox's)

It will really only be used on weekends plus I don't need space as I have a TB external which is just hooked up to the network.

EDIT: Another reason is that it's the only desktop computer in my house, everybody who resides here owns a laptop.

Then I'd say get a 4gb USB drive, and install XP on it. Dont think you'll get a cheaper option than that. You could try some form of linux as well, I'm sure you can also install that onto a USB.

I'll probably order a 4GB CF and CF to SATA converter from Hong Kong... Much cheaper that way. Otherwise for now I'm going to use my 4GB flash drive.

Don`t know if you will be able to do what you want to do on ubuntu live, in which case you will only need a cd.
