What are you waiting for? Just go apply to for a smart card ID now. Just find out which home affairs office in your area offers it.

Money making ploy to benefit anc and zooma. One wonders what's next... there's a tax for almost everything these days. We even pay tax for paying tax (whatever that means). Didn't vote the suckers in, sure won't in the next iteration either (this time my finger is UP).

Money making ploy or not. If these asshlose decide to charge, we will all pay. They will probably waive the fee to certain income groups only.

Remember a few years ago when the old ID number (ending in 001 / 002 / 003) got changed to the new 08x range and new ID documents started getting barcodes? Home Affairs had to do squat! Banking, finance and retail industries later just decided that they would no longer accept the old ID documents without barcodes.

So, anyone who applied for a loan, home loan, vehicle finance, rented a vehicle, applied for a job, opened a clothing account, opened any account for that matter were forced to produce the new ID document. These sectors forced the majority of the population into applying for new ID documents.

This will happen again. No need for HA to do anything at all.
