I hope this is the right place to ask this question and would appreciate any help or feedback.

My brothers wife last month upgraded her contract and received a Samsung Galaxy S2 as her phone. She got the shock of her life when the bill for the data came to approx R3500.00

The phone was never used as a modem and she does not use twitter or facebook etc on it. She does not use it for internet and plays only 2 downloaded games, Restaurantville and some other similar game.

The wifi and router mode have never been turned on and over the air updates are off as well.

My question is this:
Can MTN supply her with a list of IP addresses or websites that the data was downloaded from as Auto Page do not want to help her in any regard other than saying the data has been used.

My brother is more than happy to pay if it can be proved what the data was used on or what downloaded the data?

Any help would be appreciated.

maybe she is lying ? :P

Well you can easily do 1.7 gigs on that phone, if you are downloading apps, games, using maps, and watching youtube.

But with just downloading that ? shouldn't be so much. I know some games, need like a 500 meg update, but those are the game loft ones, not restaurantville.

btw, my mom uses 1.5 gigs on average over my wifi a month on her phone. No idea what she does though :P

Download 3g watchdog, keep an eye on the usage, there are data counter apps that can give per-app usage too

Maybe youtube !
Get her a BlackBerry.

I've got an HTC Desire HD, very similar phone to the Samsung Galaxy S2. I'm what I would consider a heavy user, I use my phone for browsing, facebook, twitter, youtube, updating, google maps, etc and I only use about 500 - 800MB per month.

The last three days I have used a gig on my IPad, just browsing watching some youtube, nothing really excessive for me. I used to all of this over my phone on weekends and vacation but I have the bundle on the pad now. Quite easy to use up that amount of data without really thinking about it until you get the bill.

I have the same phone she has to install s data usage program . and see where the data is going .if she has face book and a few more apps on all the time for sure the phone will use excessive data .she must switch off the 3G when she is not using the 3G. besides saving battery time she will save data to. look on the phone to see what is running and you will know what is using the data

The problem was found to be AP Mobile that comes pre-installed on the handset by Samsung (cannot be uninstalled or stopped unless the phone is rooted). It is an RSS international news feed. Even though the widget had been removed from the home screen and was not in use, it was still using data. On one occasion it used 550MB in 3.5 hours. It took 3 months of pain to the URL usage information from the "service provider" via the network operator and it showed that of 74k URL's visited, 52k were to AP Mobile (70%). The occasion when it used 550MB, all the URL's were AP Mobile related. Apparently when I discussed it with Samsung the third time, it is a "known" software issue!

Although this thread is specifically about the Samsung Galaxy S2, can anyone confirm whether this issue might / does affect ALL Samsung smartphones ? For e.g., the Y and M series.

I'm half thinking of getting one of them, and don't want to root it.

Netquin also proactively stops automatic internet connections until permission is granted by user

you can request and itemised Billing, and it will show when the connections was made,
please let me know if you get it right, or i can try and assit you.

did she leave the country? could it be roaming charges?

i have seen many bills like this, and it could possibly be updates, and this happens on the statement in batches.

hope you come right, or PM me her details and i will get IB for you.

thanks.
