Smartphones are going mainstream

Do users on BB contribute to strain on the network, since they go through BIS and RIMs own network?
VC have said that 100MB through BIS is closer to 500MB on a normal phone, due to compression techniques employed
Does this mean every BB user migrating to another smartphone is extra strain on the network now?

Rumours (on the forum) are that the network is fairly strained as is - can one image another 1.5m using 500MB each :/

mmm not sure. It will put strain on the BTS side...on the backhaul of that BTS and also a BTS is only able to handle so many users at one time. BIS traffic is dumped into the RIM link fairly quickly and diverted away from Vodacoms core network...or that is how I imagine it.

I imagine, that there is no standalone BB network. Everything's on vodacom (or the Provider in question).

RIM can't afford to setup a network in every country they sell phones in. The BB APN(?) allows for the separate protocol/billing. Obviously there would need to a be a link to the RIM servers, but all the traffic is still carried by the vodacom network.
