I ordered ADSL about a month ago.

A technician (NOT Telkom...they are now outsourcing in Durban due to demand) arrived this morning to test the line and confirmed that all is well.

I was caught by surprise (only 1 month!!) so I rushed out to look for a modem.

In the Pinetown area, there is not much choice when it comes to retailers so I ended up buying a SMC ADSL2 Barricade SMC7904BRA modem with built-in 4 port router.

Now I am trying to set it up...

I have 2 PC's that I need to connect.

I have plugged all cables in but don't seem to be able to connect to the router.

Both router power light and DSL light come on, as well as 2 LAN lights. Hunky dory.

BUT...

XP Pro does not see any new hardware.

On the installation disk, there is no setup file...only a manual in .pdf format and 2 other files: DesktopDB and DesktopDF with NO file extentions??

The manual says: "Enter the address http://192.168.2.1 in browser."

Browser (Opera) tells me "Could not connect to remote server

You tried to access the address http://192.168.2.1/, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page."

Is anyone able to assist from this point?

TIA

XP Pro will not see any new hardware.

You do not need to install any drivers on the workstation for the ADSL to work.

Do the current PCs have static or dynamic IP addressing. Change one workstation to the following static IP settings:

IP: 192.168.2.50
SM: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1

Then connect to the ADSL router using IE with the address: http://192.168.2.1 on the above mentioned machine.

Configure all the settings on the ADSL router. Enable DHCP on router.

Change the settings on the two PCs to use DHCP to get IP info. Restart both machines. Should work now...

ADSL router connection settings:
Protocol: PPPoE
Encapsulation: LLC
VPI 8
VCI 35
