Smit to continue as Springbok Captain

The decision by new Springbok coach Peter de Villiers to name John Smit as his captain did not come as a surprise and serves to confirm that there will be a big stress on continuity when the new international season arrives in June.

“I was very impressed with John and have enormous respect for what he has achieved with the Springboks in the last four years. He is the World Cup-winning captain. He has global respect and he has the desire to add to what was achieved in France last year,” said De Villiers in a press release issued from the offices of SA Rugby on Wednesday afternoon.

De Villiers ideally wants Smit to continue his domestic rugby in South Africa and Smit has agreed to do so provided SA Rugby and his French club Clermont Auvergne can agree on terms and conditions.

De Villiers said: ........................
"It was important for me to officially confirm the situation to ensure there is no misinformation based on speculation."

This is great news.

I must say that I think there was a doom and gloom rush to judgement by the public and the players after the Jake White era. Hence the issues of players with oversees contracts.

Didn't de Villiers say he'd pick the team, then the captain? Or was that someone else? Is Smit the best in his position?

the plan was luke watson.
but i think everyone changed their mind, as there would've been an outrage or just no attendance at rugby matches.
