I've been wanting to keep a record of packet performance for a while, the best utility I have seen is the one regardt started using a while back, SMOKEPING.
unfortunately, I couldn't use it as I only have on linux box thats permanently up is smoothwall, and my pc is always inbetween nix and windows sessions!

ALL that has now changed!!

I realised smoothwall already has many of smokepings dependancys, and some can easily be configured, so I managed to mod smokeping into smoothwall last night!
it uses smoothwalls built in web server at port 441, I'm currently trying to integrate it into the GUI, but worst case, it will be a standalone page

if theres sufficient interest, I'll set up an installation script, and put the files up for download.

I actually think I'll do it anyways when I get a moment, maybe then all smoothwall users on mywi can post their pages on a sticky, so other 'prospective customers' can see what the service is about from a multitude of users![xx(]

Sounds pretty cool dorris - I must check up on that, but it'll be for ADSL.
I'm also looking around to a usage plugin for smoothwall that can keep daily/weekly/monthly traffic stats. A firewall ad blocker would be good too.

BTW, what I've setup at home is a spare PC for Linux with a monitor/keyboard switcher, so I can switch between windows and linux with the flick of a switch. Pretty much like in a NOC, except the hardware is cheaper but effective. Got all the bits 'n pieces from Cable Link in Strydom Park. I think it cost around R500 with the switch box, 2 x monitor, 2 x keyboard and 2 x mouse cables.

I'm using slackware 10 with dropline gnome 2.8 or KDE 3.3.1 (compiled from source) and kernel 2.6.8.1

I dual boot the windows PC just to test various distributions, but with the Sentech **** connection, getting hold of distributions as they are released is impossible - have to rely on dodgy local mirrors and I'll be on ADSL soon, so downloading a 3 CD release is just not an option.

Anyway, wouldn't mind checking out that Smokeping sometime !

I'm mostly just a plug-n-pray n00b with SmoothWall and the like- but I can at least get it to handle the 'net connection for a network! bb_matt, you may find what you're looking for in this pile of stuff: http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2873

yeah, the mod exists, its called bandview
can keep track of stats as you require, and with a bit of tweaking, can also get stats on individual pc's, I've also hacked in a little extra section on the traffic graphs to monitor individual pc's traffic, I'll get working on an easy to use install script when I get the time ... oh, i forgot, Varsity's on holiday, all I have now is time! hehe
