Hi all,
I am using a smoothwall server and my ADSL modem is a 'symphony' type!
Up to now I've been using them as part of a VLAN on my switch (so the network configuration of smoothwall was GREEN+RED), but now I have to make direct connections from the modem to the smoothwall server, so I'm trying to activate the ADSL. But nothing happens! I think it is because the modem driver is not in the smoothwall list!
Can anyone help me on it? I really appreciate any help!

More details ?

The way you setup smoothwall, is to use an internal IP range on the GREEN interface, say, 192.168.10.x and then setup the RED interface as PPPoE - you can modify this in Smoothwall without having to reinstall, either by directly accessing the box, or using SSH, then just type setup, hit enter and modify.

Once you've configured the RED as PPPoE, access smoothwall via your web browser and setup a dialup network account (can't remember exactly what it's called on Smoothwall, as I now use IPCop)

The setup is really easy - the interface should be PPPoE, Connection set as Persistent, then just put your ADSL user name and password in.

Obviously make sure your ADSL modem is connected to the RED ethernet NIC
Then in smoothwall, just click "connect"

Well actually I have the green interface and the dhcp working fine. Now when I change the network configuration to GREEN (RED is modem, ISDN), that's where the ADSL activation doesn't function!
In the smoothwall manual nothing was mentioned about the dialup connection and the web interface for the ADSL configuration! Can you explain a bit more?

Your network configuration must be RED+GREEN (or GREEN+RED - not sure what the default is called) - you must not use the GREEN (RED is modem, ISDN) - that's probably your problem.

You many need to reinstall smoothwall - I've had trouble with network cards when trying to change the network type in the past, as smoothwall then tries to detect another network card, as opposed to using one already detected. If it starts doing that, just reinstall.

During install, disable ISDN entirely and under network type, choose RED+GREEN
Setup the green as you already have. Then setup the RED to PPPoE.

Once you've done that, in your web browser, you configure your connection, afaik, through the ppp settings section, making sure the interface is set to PPPoE.

I wrote a MyWireless+Smoothwall HOWTO last year :-
http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=13321&highlight=smoothwall+howto

Exactly the same config applies to smoothwall + ADSL modem

Hmmm, before we go on with this ...

How does your modem connect to your smoothwall box ?
Ethernet or USB ?

It is USB and it can be connected via LAN cable as well.
I am really grateful for all the help!

Well, if it can be connected via a standard ethernet cable, then that's what you must do - follow that link to the smoothwall HOWTO and your good to go.

Actually I can do nothing now for a few hours, because the red interface is set and everybody is using the internet for the time being! I'll have to wait till everyone goes home!
I'll follow your instructions and continue the thread within hours.
Thank you in advance

Dear bb!

I had it configured and now it's workong fine!
Thank you!
