's up all?

At the moment my setup is as follows...

1 x 4-port (DHCP) router in building #1.

PC #1 plugs straight into the router. PC #2 (mine) runs via an inter-building cable into the router for 'net and LAN usage. This works as-is!

---

I have another PC with 2 network cards, and potentially another one available. This PC is running a fresh install Smoothwall.

What I'm playing around with...

My PC plugs into SW card #1 (DHCP), and is assigned an IP.
SW card #2 is set to a static IP and plugs into the router.

I can ping my SW box, but I cannot ping the router, or anything else.

All IPs are 192.168.1.xxx

Router 192.168.1.1
SW #1 192.168.1.2
SW #2 192.168.1.3

What am I missing? What do I need to do to get access beyond the SW box?

Ideally the SW box needs to be behind the router protecting both PCs...

Thanks, N.

It's a Planet, I *think* 4400e...and I have seen an option for Bridge mode in the settings. :)

Building #1 also has one PC connected, at the moment, directly to the router.

I can do that, and will give it a try this evening.

Thanks ic.

I'll let you know it goes. :)

Will need to organize another switch for when the mate's come over. ;)

Cheers, N.

the problem is that all your Ip`s are on the same subnet. thus the smoothie cant route between the "outside" ie the side of your router and the "inside" your green network. all you have to do is change either sides Ip range. what i would suggest it to set your router to bridge mode and then set your smoothie to use PPPOE dailup (you do this in the setup during instalation[set your red interface to PPPOE]) . you thus keep your Ip ranges as is since the PPPOE protocol does not use IPs in the traditional way. the smoothie will then create a dailup connection. when nessasary.

may you have many hours of joy from your smoothie.

Thanks Tsimo.

I'll setup the network as suggested by ic and then configure it as you've stated. :)

The ADSL connection should stay on 24/7 ideally. :)

I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers, N.

Tsimo's got it right.

You should have overlapping subnets.

There also is a sticky on the smoothwall community forums on how to connect to a PPPoE device... here

OK, I'm pulling my hair out here...

Forgetting the ADSL out for now...

Problem #1

If I put a switch (Planet brand) inbetween my line and the router/other PC I get nothing, but plug my line straight into the router/other PC we have a connection - what gives? :(

Problem #2

All cables tested, all NICs tested, all ports on the router tested, and having tested the PC #1's port, do you think I could get a connection between PC #1 and the F'ing router? Not a chance. :( I tried 3 different cables! :o

Plug my line into the router, no matter which port, and we have an instant connection...Eish!

I have NO regrets about getting out of the IT industry. :D

Librarian...*trying* to use it at Home. :|

Cheers, N.

you may have a crossover (or indeed a non crossover) cable running there. if you do not have a auto sensing switch it will give you probs.. as far as i remember the cable between a switch / hub shoud be straight.
if you want the cabling structure i will pass that along.

Hi Tsimo,

Thanks for the input.

The current status...

PC #1 has been removed from the setup - faulty network port suspected. More on that later...the router is currently also disconnected from the scenario.

I have just checked all the cables...all are now straight-through and all are working, along with the router and switch.

All cables are straight-through except for the line from PC #2, that one's two green wires were swapped over.

Thinking that may be a problem, I've replaced that cable with a matching wire straight-through cable.

If I plug my line into the router then I have no issues, I can go out.

If I plug my line into GREEN 192.168.1.2 on the SW box then I can get a DHCP address assigned, and ping the SW box.

If I plug the router cable into GREEN 192.168.1.2 on the SW box then I can ping the router.

However, if I plug my line into the switch, and the switch is connected to GREEN 192.168.1.2 then I cannot get through to the SW box and thus not get a DHCP address.

Remember, RED is the PPPoE interface...

What am I missing? Why does adding the switch cause chaos? It is definately working.

*sigh*

No wonder I got out of IT...

Thanks to anyone who attempts to answer this, you have no idea how thankful I am. *lol*

i think that the router may alos be handing out DHCP leases. as T_L sez.

<funny ASCII diagram effect>

router - -> Smoothie Red =SmoothieBox= Smoothie Green <- - Network
Internet - -> Smoothie PPPOE //

@ Mikroz - if you want me to come and visit, and help you, then PM me and we can take it from there.

The stock Smoothwall is supposed to work right from any reinstall (except for the dial-up username and password), but when the hardware decides to play hardball, you will get all sorts of funnies.

Before I installed my first Smoothie, I had a shufti at the documentation, and that helped a lot - I have installed a lot of Smoothies, all with a good success rate so far.

I've found that some motherboards tend to go wonky and throw their toys out of the cot when you try to add a 2nd NIC... dunno why.

Alright, times up...I'm putting the Welcome mat out to the world. ;)

I have officially given up. :o

I contacted the chief scientist at NASA who some calculations and told me that every possible option had been tried and that, in this universe, it's unlikely to happen. Hehe.

PM'd you T_L...

Thanks all, N.

OK, update...I brought EVERYTHING into work today for the guys to help with this BS...

We get the SW box to give my machine a DHCP address...we set the router's built-in firewall OFF, set everything to bridge mode, and turn the routers DHCP OFF.

If I plug the router into the SW box, using any cable, the green light on the SW box goes on, but the router show orange and I get sweet Fa of a connection.

The SW box is set to GREEN and RED PPPoE.

Everything is plugged in correctly.

My router is a Planet, and the SW box has the modem selected as USB generic, which is the closest option available.

WtF am I missing? :(

Thanks, N.

ahh.. did you enter your user account details int e the smoonthie in Networking -> PPP?

akay..also you should disable all the ADSL modems in the smoothie setup as you are not connecting a dsl modem to the USB port on the smoothie. setting the router to bridge effectively makes it to a bridge device. the basic principal is that the dsl modem (your planet) creates a in bridge mode creates a PPPOE Carrier signal out of the Telkom ADSL line and feeds that over the network cable to the Smoothie which uses it to "call" your ISP and get an IP address via the PPPOE tunnel that your Planet modem provides.

so in effect you need to resetup your smoothie and disable ADSL modems and ISDN modems. change your red interface to PPPOE, give the smoothie webpage your ADSL creds and bob is your uncle.

^^^ what he said.

There is also an sticky on the smoothwall forums dedicated to setting up PPPoE connections here
