I don't have a spare ADSL connection at work with which to test, so that'll have to wait until tonight...but I have now disabled ADSL on the SW box, and set it to GREEN and RED (Modem, etc.).

@ Mikroz - set up the smoothie as normally.

Then you run the Setup program, and assign a network card to RED.

Then you change the RED card's setup to PPPoE, and all should be straightforward from there.

But do have a shufti at the Smoothwall forums as there's a lot of good information there.

OK, I've now checked all cables...every cable is now running CAT5e-A, just to make it all universal.

I've set the SW to GREEN and RED (PPPoE) - which defaulted to 'smoothwall' and IP 0.0.0.0 subnet 0.0.0.0

This I presume is set when an ADSL connection is available...

Depending on where I plug whatever cable into, I either get no connection, or orange lights...F'ing confusing. I would say port #1 on my switch is F'ed, but depending on what gets plugged in there, it actually lights up? *sigh*

At the moment, my PC is connected to the switch, which is connected to GREEN - I have a SW-assigned DHCP address, .100, which I set as permanent to my MAC address a while ago.

If I plug the router into either the SW or my PC it lights up green, but if I plug the router into the RED, I get an orange light on the router and no connection. The router and RED ports DO work.

I'm assuming that tonight when I get Home, and plug an ADSL line into the router I will get a connection...if not, it's hammer-time. :D

Everything is setup as suggested in this thread.

If it's a no-go tonight, then I've had enough. :|

Thanks everyone, N.

okay. i think that you are missing a critical step or i am misunderstanding you. your router should not do anything .
all that it should do is the DSL light should be up and it should have a LAN connection into the red interface. that and the fact that it has been set to bridge is the end of the participation in this setup of the router.
your best bet would be to look at the physical lan port of your smoothie box connecting to the router and see if it lights up.
if it does that all is well. if not then your prob lies on that cable/port of the router (try another one).
now.
once that is fixed go to the web inteface. and do the PPPOE setup.

the Ip settings for the red interface is set when the connection is started.

hope that helps.

Remember, in this case, the DSL router does not initiate the connection, but the Smoothie does.

So you'll need to set up an PPPoE profile. You'll only need your username/password and nothing else.

I'm all packed up here, but will be setting it back up at Home tonight.

I'll recheck and let everyone know how it goes; thanks!

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! F*CKING BREAKTHROUGH!

I'm writing this BEHIND my firewall!

...don't ask, I have NO idea what I did, but it's working.

Now I just have to get a nice list of what ports to setup. :) This is rather different to my last f/w...Sygate Pro.

Thank you EVERYBODY for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

The problem with the PC #1 btw, was a faulty MoBo.

It remains to be checked whether my switch port #1 is faulty too.

Cheers, N.

Does all of that get integrated into the firewall, or does it run seperately?

My apologies if that's a daft question?

...what is all of that - with the exception of ClamAV

Mikroz

These are mods other people developed which you can install on your Smoothwall for added functionality.

Dansguardian is a content filter, able to filter out pr0n sites based on their content. At the basic level, you only need to set the naughtyness limit, it works automatically. There's a few sites which it might block, such as news24.co.za (especially with articles containing certain words), but it is easy to assign whitelist status to certain sites which you do not want to block.

ClamAV - antivirus

Full Firewall Control - You can add your own rules as to which ports should be blocked incoming as well as outgoing, so you can create some flexible rules. For example, if a virus uses port 666 to replicate to the outside world, then you can deny outgoing on port 666 (as example).

Adzap with Squid - Ever noticed those small advertisements? By themselves they do not consume much bandwidth, but a lot of these will chomp up your bandwidth. Adzap blocks these before they have a chance to travel through your line.

Bandview - This mod should be rated above excellent. What it does is it displays a graphical display of your total bandwidth used. You can also use this to keep track of bandwidth used per workstation.

At Home? Why on Earth would I want to filter OUT porn? *lol*

I was reading up on ClamAV mods last night as I have that installed on the other PC, but it looks like you need to manually edit stuff through the Linux...which I know nothing of...

I need to rtfm. :D

The rest of the mods sound sweet!

Thanks, N.

Hi all,

I have a problem that I jut can't figure out...

Ever since I got this thing setup my ADSL disconnects every few minutes...

I have turned the Idle option off, but it still disconnects randomly.

It will then try to reconnect, usually unsuccessfully.

Sometimes a reboot seems to help (SW reboot), but other times I could be offline for ages.

It's REALLY annoying.

Anyone else have issues like this? It worked 100% before this setup.

Thanks, N.

Mikroz - the Homebrew section on the Smoothwall forums have all the information you need to install these mods.

As for the disconnections, it sounds like your red NIC might be problematic.

Tried getting the ClamAV to work just now via the FTP app and PuTTY solution, but it didn't like the Linux command as shown on the site...will try again.

The heat is frazzling my brain.

Possibly daft question, but if I get ClamAV working on the SW then there is no need for AV on the PCs?

If it proves easy I may try installing the rest of the suggested mods except for the content filter.

Thanks, N.
