Hi guys

I recently installed Zentyal just to see what its like. Its pretty and seems to have nice reporting etc but the biggest limitation was that you can not allow traffic in its forwarding chain destined for the internal network(s) which makes it kinda useless for me. The only way you can get traffic into your network is using NAT / port forwarding.

Now I started looking at smoothwall which also looks kinda cool. I have also noticed that smoothwall has a branded hardware appliance which I quite like.

- Are there local smoothwall suppliers in SA, and if so who sells them?
- Can the community version do filtering on traffic forwarding through the firewall in any direction?

+1. PfSense is awesome.

There is a local Smoothwall distributor but be warned they are persistent, I enquired about products and pricing from them once and was called constantly to try and get me to buy their stuff. The company is Report Star (http://reportstar.net/). They have some nice stuff but it is quite pricey.
 
PFSense is cool if you dont have specific adapters/hardware which is not recognized by freebsd e.g. wifi adapters.. kinda why i went with Zentyal

The OP seems like he is willing to buy dedicated hardware and you could probably do better building your own for cheaper and use pfsense.
I'm sure you could get some pukka production environment intel lan & wireless adapters that should work fine on a bsd based platform.
