Is anyone else on Virgin Mobile experiencing the following problem or has possibly solved it:

After an EDGE session the phone does not receive sms for a while. The sms only come through much later as soon as a phone call is made or an sms is sent from the phone.

And yes I know virgin mobile sucks!

This is not limited to Virgin. We have had the same problem at work with our support phones - various Nokias.

From my experience with GSM modems for both data & SMS usage, for EDGE, they share the same hardware modem (it seems for 3G they use a separate modem component). As soon as you leave your EDGE session open for too long, it locks up the modem and you need to dial out or reset the phone.

Oh, and this is on Vodacom BTW.

Interesting. Had this for a long while and it has just really started to irritate me now. Strange thing is that some of my friends don't have the same issue. Virgin itself does not have its own network so you go in over cellc. My girlfriend can also go in over mtn and vodacom while I can't. When she selects vodacom she doesn't have this problem but when she selects cellc she does. Strangly my sim card doesn't allow me to select vodacom.

This is not a network problem as such, but as mentioned, a hardware problem. Personally I suspect a locked data session and its possible that using a 3rd party network could increase the chance. I also know that I have seen this problem will CellC (Nokia N90) and we have full coverage of all 3 networks at our office.

Our MTN test phone is a SAMSUNG and we seldom use it for WAP (Oh, I work for a WASP and we test all 3 networks on a hourly basis - SMS & WAP).

Weird things happening. I tried to switch the network to vodacom again (virgin over vodacom) and it worked this time. not only that but 3G works!
