We have a lot of people to inform and automated SMSing via a service provider will be easier.

There are 2 x websites - www.babyboom.co.za and www.babycity.co.za which provides this service - it is a free service to notify friends and family of the birth of your baby.

Unfortunately, they prescribe the content of the SMS to be sent out. The only input the user has, is the gender, name and weight of the baby.

Does anyone perhaps know of another similar service, maybe with more leeway re: the wording ?

Thanks

Hi

Last year I sent out 400 bulk sms for the birth of my daughter and I used my own system using SMSTOOLS and a 3G modem. Sure it cost me money and was not free, but since this is not an event that happens all that much in my life, we did not have an issue with the cost. At least I was able to read the replies as you will get many.

You can also look at bulk sms options by buying a bundle. Guys like http://www.pmailer.co.za offer 500 SMS for R150 (ex so its R171 inc). Her you have more control over the content and what was sent.

I don't see the point unless you are a Princess and the baby is next in line to the throne. Just send a few texts just before and after, and let word of mouth spread. (Facebook even).

People all differ, Lounger.

I was hoping for some sound advice, like cbrunsdonza gave me, instead of the nastiness I had to contend with in your post.

Don't go that route .... your looking for trouble I tell you. My list of contacts was about 10, my wifes was just under 400. I had to send 400 bulk sms, update Facebook, Tweet, I had to update her website with photos and videos and then after each update on her website, re-Tweet, re-Facebook and re-send 400 bulk SMS.

In a mans world we would just have a site called ifyoureallycare.com and post the sentence: A girl/boy was born today and another good reason to drink beer.

Where's the nastiness. The people who want to know, will find out. Put it in the newspaper ffs like normal people.

Same here.

My husband did not even understand why there was a list of people he had to inform that we are expecting a baby .... he just likes pinning his hopes on the grapevine doing its job :)

I think you should be more scared of your wife (to be) being pregnant!

I was told in no uncertain terms last night that I am "hyper" and I need to relax about the whole thing :D

Its not that bad, you go into this trance for the first couple of months. Got 3 little geeks (2 girls and 1 buy) so can talk from experience. Kids are awesome and the birth is an absolutely awesome experience. Sure your life changes but you don't care. Like this morning I've been looking after the youngest little angel, she is 6mths, since 7:30am and she only fell asleep at 11:30am again. Does not bother me and I actually enjoy it.

Well being 22 im scared of having a wife :erm:

I thought blu didn't do this whole baby thing:)

I said so ?

To put it into perspective: I do not see myself as the 'earth mother' type and I miss people talking to me about anything other than the baby and the upcoming birth :)

Other than that, I am still who I was!

My mates sent out there birth announcement on Monday, they are not tech savvy and the SMS originated from my mates blackberry, I think they just selected all their contacts in the address book and sent it from there.

Newspapers?

People still read newspaper announcements? :erm: ROFL. That really made my day. Thanks! :D

On a more serious note - this thread is quite old. Are there any new options on the market?

Sounds like a normal way. Vodacom contracts come with SMSS. I think I have like 600 accumulated.
