SMS for 0.5c? - Wikipedia

lol, well why would we see a south african company trying to lower their prices when there's clearly a market for them to milk, SMS's must make up for a huge chunk of their revenue, especially if they are making 172x what it cost them

Yep, a 140 character sms is 140 bytes plus some overhead, so lets say 200 bytes to be fair, wat do you think its costs them to send this amount of data over the network? Keep in mind the max charge for data tranfer by all the cell operators is R2 per 1,000,000 bytes....u work it out

I pay 21c/sms which is fine for me.. used to pay 86c till I purchased the sms bundle.

It should be free, and would be if our telecomms licencing wasnt born out of bs.

Sprint text messages are free

I speak under correction, but when I was in the USA in 2003, I was told that Sprint (mobile network in the USA) doesn't charge for text messages. They ARE free.

Also, looking on their website now, their cheapest plan is $29.99 per month, which gets you 200 anytime minutes and UNLIMITED off-peak (after 9pm) minutes.
201 - 700 minutes, $5 for each 50 minutes,
Above 700 Additional Anytime Minutes only $0.10 each

They do however have to use Anytime minutes or pay the per minute rate even when receiving calls.

So at about R200 per month, it seems like they are getting a pretty good deal.
Hell, we pay R135 and up for a Vodacom Weekender contract, which only has 120 off-peak minutes. Minutes that would be FREE in the USA.
Even at 25c at bulk SMS rates we are being ripped off.

Sprint PCS to Sprint PCS is free

A relative in the states just emailed me and indicated that there is an extra charge for text messages but I suspect it depends on what kind of plan you are on. And you can also be charged for sms'es you receive.

Also:
"We pay a $5 monthly fee on our plan to be able to call any other Sprint PCS cell phone free (not counted as anytime minutes)."

On our US T-mobile account we pay 5¢ (US) per incoming or outgoing sms - there are very reasonable bundles available though.

Then again, I get 1500 free anytime minutes per month for under r180.

Well, if it is tooo cheap, SMS Spam may become I problem, Im sure.

But just think if its 5c or 2c an sms - you could easily confirm all kinds of details, have a cheap more secure than web-ip-only based ways to run polls on a website, etc...

Thats only because they saw that South Africans are actually dumb enough to pay for this, and Americans, being dumber, will obviously think nothing of paying too. After all, they're in a much better position to cough up money. They can borrow so much, so easily. Yes, SCREW YOUR COUNTRIES. So much for new age patriotism. Is a global citizen, someone who will pour all their money's country down the drain of some useless corporate entity, so that eventually it will be worse off than any other country, and by this, somehow, in tune, with all the others. Bluh. Shht. yes. Thankyou. I'm talking to myself.
