This just into my MTN dashboard software via sms on 11/12/2007.

Your E620 data card needs a firmware update due to a planned network upgrade. Pls go to www.mtn.co.za/software and download the high-priority firmware update

What benefits will this offer and is this for HSDPA 3.6 or how ?

I got HOST01.11.13.04.11.08 firmware loaded onto my E620 , this was loaded by me to support the updated USSD commands when using Ging's software tool.

Version that MTN is offering is 11.18.02.60.00 and is located at http://www.mtn.co.za/exe/Firmware 11.18.02.60.00.zip

Who knows what about this ?

I would love to know in detail what was/is/going to be upgraded and how its going to potentially benefit me since I rely on my datacard heavily for internet connectivity for business purposes.

For 4000 reasons a month I would like to know what is going to be done or was done , thats my monthly contribution.

Will you please at your convenience get a list from the network department about exactly what they have up their sleeves this time if its not too much trouble?

The above i guess

Well I guess that will leave you with one of 2 choices

1. Update and use the new network features.

or

2. Don't and maybe not be able to use the network.

I personaly don't know what the upgrade intailed, but I would guess that it's security wise.

Just a guess

If I may just explain why I am asking ...

I am not trying to be a hardass with you even though it may seem so , I realise you human like me too and are present on this forum on your own free will.

I am just "reluctant" at times to willy nilly follow MTN's instructions when at times its impossible to get an answer out of them.

All well to do enhancements and call it just that for the majority of MTN customers , in my case I am a technical person by nature and money issues aside with my MTN account and bills I pay to MTN , can you get me the information or put me onto a technical person at 14th Avenue (HQ) that can answer my question.

I am more than happy to email or sms someone at MTN for this info but to reply to me a few weeks later says to me that my questions are not important and don't warrant immediate response whereas my money matters greatly.

So to cut a long story short what department can give me an answer in less than 24 hours w.r.t this "upgrade" and who can I speak to if something goes wrong?

How many MB is it to download? and do MTN subsidise our Firmware updates or do we haveto pay for this as well?

I think 1555 might be the most up to date on this development. I also only got the SMS and was made aware of it from there.

3.6mbps could be a possibility.

With the communication being sent out globaly via sms I doubt MTN would do something to deprive you of a set feature if that is wht your fearing. That would just open a huge can of worms for this time of year.

Thank you sir , 1555 does take long to pickup though :-(
They don't have a changelog , I've updated the firmware anyways.
All working as per normal.

Worries me if by any chance it removes the sim swap option we need to use for prepaid data as MTN doesn't allow topup for 30 days.
Agree with the above re trusting MTN's please just do without any details
remembering they have this at the bottom of their device download page

The software won't be able to lock it to a sim. That is very unlikely. It would make the Data card useless. Meaning that it would have no resale value. ;)

I got it too.
Optimizations for 3.6Mbits/s HSDPA...?
Now that would be cool!
The new FW does not support USSD commands
I saw this as well, but after rebooting my computer USSD commands work. This firmware is also not network-locked.

Well done MTN for finally releasing an E620 firmware that supports USSD! :D
And a big thank you to MTN_Data_Dude for being involved with this just over a year ago. ;)
