i see a lot of ads on TV that say SMS the word love to 35050 for daily love quotes. they range from pictures, videos, songs etc. are these people/companies making money and how popular is it

SMS* freemoneyfromstupid to 33456 and I will tell you :)

* Std rates (R7-50) per SMS apply. No free or bundle. Daily subscription R15.00. SMS "STOP" to terminate. No early termination.

A company sets up a shortcode through a wasp. The wasp will have connections to the networks. The networks take a cut of the money and give the wasp some. The part the wasp gets funds any smss they send you and whatever service they provide. They must be profitable if they are still advertising I guess.

sorry i had'nt seen your link thanks very much.

guys more info will be greatly appreciated

I think the TV ads does make money. But you obviously need a lot of capital. Perhaps the right printed ad would also do the job.
What are you planning skyhawk?

I work for one of the countries largest WASPS and all I can say is I still get my salary each month. On profitibility, well very few services actually make it due in the industry.

Recently a close friend wanted to launch a service, she is excellent at marketing and I would have made money out of it, but I talked her out of it as I see daily her idea fail. Then again I've seen ideas that I doubted turning into very succesful campaigns.

Oh, and not all successful services are billed services. But you would have to pay me lots of money for me to give advice on what works in the industry.

From what I understand is that if you buy certain TV slots in bulk, you pay next to nothing. Print ads on the other hand can be very expensive, easily pay R100K for a quarter ad in a provincial weekend paper.

You are not allowed to be charged for an opt-out SMS, but who the hell cares? Nobody's going to enforce anything here

Actually you are not allowed to charge more than R2 for an opt-out message but the more credible companies make use of what we call nominal numbers. The companies and WASPS get no revenue from these numbers and they cost 50c-80c depending on your cellphone package.

It should be free but the networks are not interested.

Who cares. The absolute fortune being made by these companies are immense. Remember when there was only one or two providers? Now there's a freaking provider promoting everything from games to sex tips. FFS who subscribes to this ****?

Who are the people who use these services though!? Who is stupid enough to spend 7.50 per week on something either completely useless or can be found on the internet? Sometimes humanity amazes me with it's idiocy...

basically what i want to do is (lets say) sell some pictures of sports stars for R3/ week. how do i go about is. it will be something like
sms the word "athlete" to get latest pictures of your favorite athlete. that is the gist. but the problem is i don't have any idea how to do it and the cost of advertising on TV etc . help

You need Software for receiving, prcessing and sending sms, Computers, networks and SMS contracts with a cell phone company.

That BulkSMS place I linked to - they have quite a lot of info and software ('doze only) for sending and receiving via their Bulk system. You should however be aware that selling pictures of any would require model release and especially when the person is high profile, they will need to be aware of and consent to the sale of their images, as the use not editorial. OF course, you may already have known that.
