So I was looking for an easy to use, cheap SMS API and came across smsportal.co.za and signed up.
I have credits and tested it using their single message feature but don't receive anything on my Telkom number. Has anyone else used them? Credits have come off but after 5 or so tries, still nothing to the phone...

Have you tried contacting their support to ask about this? You know, the thing they have available to you as a support function to keep you from switching to other services? It could be a very small/easily fixed issue.

Duh yes... but since it's a part time project, I was hoping to resolve it over the weekend...

Anyway, long story short, my number is on the DMA list and they need to whitelist it to send to me so problem solved.

Also look at GrapeVine, bulkSMS could not deliver international SMS's when I last used it
GrapeVine was cheaper and response was better.
No more queries for OTP's not arriving after we made the move
